Gas gauge stuck

So I found out my gas gauge doesn't work. The needle is past the full line and won't move. I thought maybe if I filled the gas tank as high as I could it might unstick it but that didn't work. Is there any way I could fix this on my own or would I have to take it to the shop? I hate not being able to fix stuff on my own. Any ideas?
