frankfletez Thanks. The possible causes you describe, are those easy fixes?
The question has to do with the fact that I keep my trusty '93 YJ in Mexico for when I am there: although there are competent mechanics there they don't necessarily have access to the wealth of information we have here at home.

Have a great weekend

18derrick My guess is that you have a vacuum leak or the vacuum switch in the transfer case is doing something funky. All of your 4wd is operated by vacuum except the one switch that turns the light on and off.

check engine light, tied to 4WD use?

Greetings eveyone, I'd appreciate advice on the following:
Most times after I engage/disengage from 4WD the 'Check Engine' light comes on and the car hesitates, mis-fires (as if the timing were off or the gas were dirty). By accident I found that turning off the engine and re-starting it most time solves the problem -as the engine seems to go back to normal and the pesky light goes off.
How do I solve the above for good?

Thanks,

Frank Fletez
