Sanchez Well I'm getting the 4.10 installed. If it is too short of a gear for highway driving, looks like I'm going to get me some 35's! Thanks everyone!

For the 3-speed automatic, 4.0L engine, and 33" tires, 4.10 is the optimal ratio and installing them would be a very good idea. Especially for the highway, not to mention the obvious offroad benefits.

Wesboy I have a '97 3 speed auto running 33's (came with 3.07's) - put 4.10's in a few months ago.

Upside
It's a lot better off-road.
On road - bit more pick-up.
On the highway there's no more down-shifting every time there's a hill or head-wind.

Downside.
Revs it's tattas off on the highway.
50mph 2200rpm
55mph 2500rpm
60mph 2750rpm
70mph just under 3000rpm
75mph 3250rpm

I don't monitor my mpg too closely but the Jeep really sucked it down when I was punching a head wind on the highway with the 3.07's.
Not so much with the 4.10's but wind direction is still the most signicant factor to affect mpg.

TJNewbie The "big dogs" are gonna tell you to go with the 4.10s or even 4.56s. That does give your jeep more power to the wheels but sucks worse on fuel milage (with the 3 speed auto). I've asked alot of people that have the 3 spd auto (like my 2000 tj does), they either already had 3.73s or went with the 3.73s on thier gear swap. And they all said it's the perfect ratio for the thier jeep being used as a DD with some Weekend Warrior trail riding. I've also found several jeepers that had the 3 spd auto went the 4.10s and said- "the power gain wasn't worth the mpg loss and high rpm at highway speeds". That being said, if you think you'll ever consider going to 34" or 35" tires then go with the 4.10s +

Kevinm2467 33's and the 3-speed auto is the perfect combo for gearing at 4.10. That is exactly what I have also. I am also running a 6 inch all suspension lift.

tj_guy99 I have a '99 Sahara that I recently had 4:56 gears put in. I drove to Colorado on my new 33" tires with the auto and felt I would have been better off with the 4:10s. At 65mph, I was running approximately 3200rpm. I knew what to expect, but it sucks gas down at 3200rpm. Here is a formula that will give you some idea of what to expect with the different ratios:

MPH = RpM X Tire Diameter/ Gear Ratio X 366

The 4:56 were great in the mountains when I was in 4 low. Also, if you have 3:07 currently, you will need to buy a larger carrier to fit anything over 3:73. I hope it all works out well for you.

Jcole231 I have been battling the same thing. I have a 2000 Sahara as well but have the 5 speed with 3:73s. I just ordered 4:56s tonight after a lot of reading. I'm not sure with the 3 speed but I have a feeling ur not gonna here any opinions numerically lower than 4:88 with urs
