I trimmed mine it to the width of the frame when I had the stock bumper.
I still occaisionally catch my stubby bumper on rocks still. Less bumper is good for rock crawling or when climbing things.

|Jerry Bransford||Short stubby bumpers are so they don't block the front of the tires which gives you a much steeper (better) approach angle. Plus they're usually lighter as well. I kept nailing the front of my 58" bumpers with rocks until I went to a 44" stubby bumper. Not many actually need a stubby bumper though.|

Front Bumper Length
Is the only advantage to a shorter front bumper that your tires can engage an obstacle (read Mazda Miata) rather then your bumper? My Jeep is my dd, soooo, I imagine that a longer bumper is better so the front suspension does not get messed up if I hit another car with the corner of the Jeep. On the other hand, the shorter bumper might help me run over all these little sports cars in Atlanta.
Any advantages/disadvantages on the front bumper length? 48"? 54"?
