Well, in my opinion, if the filters match up mechanically like that, the bigger filter, assuming it also contains more filter media, will probably filter a little better for these reasons: The bypass will open less often and for a shorter period of time when the oil is cold and thick, and/or the engine RPM is high. A lower rate of face flow velocity usually catches and holds particulates more efficiency than when the fluid is speeding through the media...Larger surface area or media for a given flow slows the velocity and is usually desirable.
But having stated all this theory, I've seen too many engines run 300K miles or better with whatever random oil filters were on sale, and have formed the opinion that any oil filter that runs somewhere around 94%-95% efficiency or better at 20 microns, and holds up in use, is probably plenty good enough for a very long engine life. (Most dirt enters the engine through the air filter anyway.)
Also, you have to be careful of substituting filters from what is tested and specified, especially if the engine is still under warranty.

If I recall correctly, I believe they are close enough in efficiency, as long as all the other specifications are the same...you know, gasket size, threads, burst rating, flow rating, anti-drain back valve, bypass valve setting, etc. Seems to me like I have used both these before on my old VW Bus (I put an oil filter set-up on it).
Arent the 30001 and 14670 the same outer size?

Time for an oil change
Tomorrow I'm gonna give the old gal some fresh oil. I went with a Puralator Pure one for the filter. I ended up getting the PL14670 however, I've read that a lot of you guys prefer the PL30001. Is it worthwhile to go grab the PL30001 or will the PL14670 be just as effective?
