Exactly doing it yourself is the best part. I'm a 17 year old kid and I did my whole kit myself. Before I started I didn't know which part was the trackbars but there's plenty of diagrams out there and with the help on this forum it's very doable. The sense of accomplishment after your done is awesome too. In the end you will be happy that you save the money on the labor and went with a higher quality lift. But as always to each his own. going up 4 inches is a lot, and to do it right, gets very expensive. like others have mentioned a 1.25 inch body lift would compliment your 2.5 suspension lift nicely, and gives you room to upgrade to things like high clearance skid plates later on. it also let you do things in stages over time, unlike a 4" kit.
if you are set on a 4" kit, do some research. you are looking at about $2000ish for the top of the line kits and even then, those will miss a few things like shocks, the SYE and driveshaft. the most "complete" kit ive seen for a low price is the Rough Country X series, however that still goes over your $1000 limit once you include the things it does not.
as far as doing it yourself, that is pretty easy, it just takes a little planning.

What do you want out of your Jeep?
Why do you think that you need to be taller? What do you think that will realistically gain you? And conversely, what will it lose you?
Why would you spend money on labor vs. tools and gaining knowledge? You have the time to do this yourself, don't let having a regular job (like everyone else) fool you.

if you want one with some of the best flex money can buy...go with Rock Krawler 3.5" (true 4") X-factor. This kit can be upgraded easily as well with a rear 4 link or long arm kit. This kit also does a GREAT job of getting rid of the front rake by leveling it...which is why its called 3.5 instead of 4" (4 in front 3.5 in rear)

|Cole 33||It's going to be tough doing a 4" sl for 1000 that's an upgrade because ur gonna need sye and cv driveshaft. Have you though about a 2-3" sl and a 1.25" bl combo that's what I'm running and it's great. Look into the dpg ultimate kit.|

Which 4" Lift Kit? (opinions wanted)
I've had my 2004 TJ for about 4 months now...it's been a blast so far I bought it with a 2.5" Skyjacker lift (with 33x12.5 MT Baja MTX's) installed on it and I'm interested in upping the Jeep to a 4" kit. Reason why is because the kit currently on it has some age to it and I also want the 33's to have a little more breathing room. I'm not a serious wheeler by any means but I am really interested in getting into it. Price range, i want to spend around $1000 on the kit itself. With that number, I can leave myself room to have a local 4wd shop install it. I would love to do it myself with some buddies but being a full time student and working almost 30 a week as well leaves me short on time. I have yet to get install quotes from shops so the price may change, I'll be sure to get that done soon. Looking for opinions and insights from everyone, all are welcome
