Sounds like you have a good plan in place, lots of good info here abouts.
One thing to think about when getting a Jeep that has already been modified is how well were the mods done. Getting a stock rig means you can modify it the way to suit your requirements.
In the mean time . . .

New member doing pre-purchase research...
Hello... Just found your community while doing some pre-purchase research. Ive wanted a Wrangler for many years (had one in Miami when in college) and now that my mid-life crisis is in full swing, what the hell...
I am in North San Diego county (Vista specifically) and looking to purchase a used Jeep Wrangler. I have no real requirements other than mechanically sound. I dont particularly care what it looks like, as I can beat the body in to submission and happily rattle can it to within an inch of its life. I just dont want to purchase something and then find out it had alot of problems.
In the old days, when buying used vehicles (previously I was a watercooled Porsche guy) I would take every potential purchase to my mechanic and have it inspected. But he was a Porsche specialist and knew exactly what to look for. I dont know a Jeep specialist, so I am turning to you guys for help with the promise that I will commit to the community and be of whatever assistance I can with other topics.
I have a budget of $5000, $5500 if I need to push it. I have found several in San Diego for that price range. They range from late 80's to mid 90's with between 110,000 and 165,000 miles. Mostly stock, a few have suspension work.
I will poke around here and do some searching, as I know as with all forums "the search button is your friend". But I figured since I was introducing myself, I would throw out a life line also!!!
