Jerry Bransford That block is held onto the axle by the vent tube that passes through it which threads into the axle. Unscrew the vent tube and replace it if it's cracked. All you can do with the cut brake line is replace it.

alex1184 so i got the rearend last night. the junk yard cut the brake line that goes from the front to the little t block (which looks like its tacked on) and the vent tube goes through it. whats the fix for this. thanks again for all the help guys.

Jerry Bransford Dana 44 axles in the early TJ years all came with a Tracloc which was standard until, I dunno, maybe 2001 or 2002 when Tracloc became an option for the D44. So your '97 D44 does have Tracloc. Whether or not the Tracloc is still functional is a different question since its clutch pack may or may not be worn out by now.

On the D44's 1" longer length at its pinion yoke may or may not be an issue. If your Jeep has a 3" or taller suspension lift, that won't be a problem as the that height suspension lift creates enough space for the OE driveshaft. If your TJ isn't lifted that much, it'd be a good idea to shorten your driveshaft an inch.

doclouie I spoke with Tom Wood about the difference between the dana 44 axle and the dana 35. Basically the 44 is 1" longer than the 35. Not too much of a difference and you could get away with the same drive shaft, but it is not an ideal situation.

alex1184 Im still not sure what to do about the driveshaft situation. I will be pissed if I bolt this thing up and it doesnt fit. I did find a driveshaft on ebay from a tj non rubi that came with a dana 44 so that should be perfect. Its only 60 bucks. Also whats up with the u joint 1310/1330 i keep reading about?

You may not need to do anything with your driveshaft. If you do, don't buy a new driveshaft; just take yours to a good driveline shop and have them shorten it.

Plowboy1970 3.55 was 97 only. Open was standard. And it is not a Rubi because all of them are 4.10 geared.

alex1184 came out of a tj, and im assuming another 97 since its a 3.55 (iv read thats the only tj that came with a 3.55). drum brakes. also assuming non
rubicon cause of the year. just wondering why is open, or was that an option. if its non rubi, how many splines is it. its on its way now freight

Mark b Remember that the Pumpkin on the 44 is longer than the 35. So you will need a new driveshaft or have yours shortened.

That is a real good deal...especially if has the Disc brakes.

Also, there are 2 different 44's that came of TJs....The regular 44 and the Rubicon 44. Basically the same but there are some minor differences between the two. Mainly inside the Pumpkins.

found a d44

Found a Dana 44 rear with 3.55 open for $580.00. I have a 97 tj with d35 3.55 that needs to be rebuilt anyways. Is this a good deal and will it bolt right up? Thanks
