|GrnTJ||Thats what Id do. Strip it down and just gut everything single possible thing I didnt need. Then POR or Herculine the entire tub inside AND out. Clean the frame as good as I could and POR that. You said you have $6000!? Id do some D60's, long arms, 37"+ tires, and a a good cage. I dont know if you planned on spending it on the Jeep but you could build it pretty well with 6K.|

So if he decided to build this thing instead of saving it. Since it is somewhat recent couldnt he gut it and POR the tub to save what is left?

if you feel like going crazy about removing rust, remove everything
Throw it in some water (1 part at a time), make sure your part is mostly or fully submerged. Take a battery charger. Connect your part to the negative lead of the charger, take 2 rods and connect them to the + side of your charger. Fill a cup w/ water, put a 3/4 tea spoon of baking soda in it, empty it in the container, then repeat this step till ur water container is filled up.
Then put your part in there, try to keep the - side terminal out of the water, should be as high as possible, it is also nice if you can attach a separate connector for that one too and screw it to the part so the negative wire is not dipped in the water at all..
put the 2 + rods on each side of the object but make sure they are not touching it. Also make sure the connection point for those is out of the water so they will be sticking out.
After everything is secured, turn on ur charger to 2 amps. If you want you can try more but i cannot tell you if its safe since i've never done it.
Simply what this does is it will strip the rust from your part (MAKE SURE ITS CONNECTED TO THE -) and it will rust your other rods (+)
Also, make sure this is in ventilated area as it will create hydrogen gas which is extremely flamable (almost 4 times more flamable than octane).
After few hours, when more rust is present, it will turn black. Next take a bottle or 2 of 2 liter coca cola and pour it in another bucket where the object from above will fit. Put it in there for few hours.. this will make it nice and shiny and remove the black coating. Do not connect anything.. just simply put it in there and let it bath for few more hours.
After this step, this is now all bare metal.. dont forget to coat it in something...

In your case you can just drive the jeep into a pool and connect it to a nice big generator.

|Sailor2017||Ohh, maybe I didn't put this out, yes, I have a new DD. This Jeep is now just going to be my toy. The mechanic is fixing the main things, I am going to go to get new seats for it, and parts are being replaced as things go. My insurance didn't cover the Jeep at all, so either way it's mine, and actually, my company gave me $6,000 for it (while still letting me keep the Jeep) The new DD is a pickup, so I'm probably going to be trailer-ing it to where ever I am going. A working A/C or heater isn't going to be necessary. The Jeep is just a toy now. Once the economy stabilizes, and i have more finances, I'm going to buy ANOTHER Jeep, which will eventually replace this one.|

I know you really like this Jeep, we can all relate, but do yourself a favor and let them insurance company total it. It's not worth it dude. You will have nothing but problems. At the very worst, buy it back cheap, buy a new DD, and stip the ENTIRE jeep. Re build it as a buggy with ALL new parts and wiring.

|Gumpit||Just remember this....Your wiring will let you down some day...When the wires are hit they act like a sponge and water gets into the plastic insulation THEN THEY CORRODE FROM THE INSIDE! You wont see it happening...And will never know which wire will fail.So if you do a rebuild.Remove and replace every wire...Insurance companies TOTAL flood cars in fresh water u can buy them back if you want but I wouldn't..But they crush salt-water flood ones...TOO dangerous...Let them TOTAL it..Buy yours back and use it for body parts only....JMHO Randy|

|jpdocdave||man i hope your mechanic just doesn't want the job to make the money. i've told you every flood car i've ever seen people drive had been falling apart, and shouldn't have been saved. i hope thats not it, but some places won't be honest, cuz they would rather sell you that job, then be truthful and tell you you shouldn't do it and walk away with out paying them thousands. good luck|

|Sailor2017||Well despite everyone's and the best advice, I decided to get my Jeep fixed. I spoke to the guy that I am having do the repair, and first he gave me the numbers on my compression test, ALL the numbers came back within specs, AND were virtually the same as when I first bought the Jeep, I am having a lot of things replaced, just to be on the safe side. But talking to the mechanic, who's dealt with a few flooded cars in the past, he keeps saying "I can't believe this was salt water". He said the Jeep held up so well, that if it weren't for a couple of blatant things, he would never believe it had been flooded.|

Haha, yeah, but when I'm at sea, I like to keep my Jeep high and dry on shore. Next time I'm going to leave it with floaties.
I'm still not sure what to do about all of the rust. Being on ships, I've got a lot of experience chipping, wirewheeling, needlegunning, and all the rest to get rust away, but not sure what I'll have to do about spaces that are inaccessable to those kind of tools. I did get a buddy to stop by and check it out, opened the hood and stuff. He said that the oil still looked ok, but that it does look like there was some h2O.
I had one of the other guys that got off the other day take my keys back shoreside, so he's going to meet a tow truck and I'll get it taken to a shop, where I'll have them evaluate some of the costs. If they think it can be saved, I'll have them do the preventative maintenance that they can, and when I get off, I'll work on all of the little extras.
I definitely want to save it if I can, but I also don't want to sink a lot of money into it, just to have her stop working, and that seems like the general consesus is that she's a goner...

I am probably going to ask the shop that I have her towed to to take some pictures before they start. (I want them to flush it for me, since I'm not there to do it myself)|

|GrnTJ||EVERYTHING rusts eventuallyI would strip out all the electrical/drivetrain and build the hell out of it. NV4500 trans, 5.7 hemi, D60's llocked up, 39"+ tires, np203/205 doubler. Thats just my two pennies though.|

So since they wont give me any money anyway, might as well jack her up, and turn her into a BEAST. We'll see I guess..|

|Jerry Bransford||If it had been under fresh water it probably could have been salvaged but if it was under salt water, forget it. Salt water just completely wrecks electrical circuits, not to mention the corrosion that has already set up inside your engine, axles, transmission, and transfer case. It's totalled, I'm really sorry man.|

You'll be able to see the water line. Start at that and work your way down. If you can get to the mechanical parts before rust starts setting in, you can get all the fluids changed before rust is an issue, then you'll just be chasing electrical gremlins. It's very likely that you would have to replace the computer, motor, and transmission if they were submerged for a long period of time. The interior will be shot if you don't get it opened up immediately after the water is drained. If it stays closed, mildew will require replacement of everything on the inside.
If you're unavailable to do this, find someone who can to minimize the damage. Time is not on your side at this point.

i've had to work on some flooded cars, and a couple were in a flood quite a few years prior, and they were screwed up. it will never be the same. rust beyond belief, and electrical issues to no end.
my advice is unless you love it so much, and you wanna keep it and fix it through all those probs, is clean it up and sell it. and you're buddy is right, change every fluid, battery, and hopefully vehicle electronics such as computers and modules are ok. i would let it sit for as long as possible to dry out.
