When you grease the zerk on the top of the spindle the grease goes down into the spindle.
There is a hole in the side of the spindle "under the carrier parts" with a grove that lets the grease between the carrier and spindle.
So yes when you tight the pinch bolts the carrier will be harder to move.

|Chieftan||I didn't even think to check if the spindle is just 1 piece of tubing, or if it has a sleeve. In other words, does the tire carrier pivot on the spindle or does the tire carrier pinch around a sleeve that pivots on the spindle? Make sense? That would certainly explain the need to loosen the pinch bolts a bit. I'll pull it back off tomorrow night,...unless someone already knows the answer. Thanks for the help.|

I have the same bumper...
1) yes the tire weight will help some.
2) yes you can over tighten the pinch bolts on the spindle
3) it WILL get easier after some use.
For the time being you can loosen up the pinch bolts on the spindle until it gets used some. The C-clip that is on the top of the spindle will hold it on there just fine. Those bolts should only be tight enofe to hold them on and thats it.

|nicolas-eric||IMO the manual says that these bolts have to be tightened only with a low spcial torque. a buddy used a torque wrench for that and his tire carrier is easy to handle.|

Trouble with Smittybilt/RuggedRidged bumber
I just installed the Rock Crawler bumber with Tire Carrier and ran into a small problem. The swing away tire carrier is extremely difficult to swing on the pivot, requiring quite a bit of muscle. I haven't put on the spare tire yet, and don't know if the weight of that will make a difference. I did grease the spindle. Did I overtighten the pinch bolts or are they supposed to be this difficult?
