Flyngolfjm When you pull the motor can you just disconnect the tranny from the motor or do you have to drop the tranny and transfer case also

crallscars I had a 96 Cherokee Country, the label on the side said it was a 4.0 "High Output"
Was there a difference in the 4.0's It seemed to have more power than my 97 4.0 TJ

In a word, NO. Although you could do it, the easiest swap is the same vehicle, same year. The further apart you are, the more wiring mods, sensors, etc. you need to change, install, and modify.

From a pure legality aspect, the Feds want the same year or newer engine - so putting in an earlier engine causes you to fail initial inspection in any state that does smog testing. Even if that doesn't include your state, it would prohibit you from selling or registering the vehicle in a state that inspects.

I need a 4.0. How much and where bouts are you?

YHSublime This doesn't really answer your question, but might put you on the right path. I talked to an junkyard this past weekend, and the guy there told me for my 1998 I-6, I could swap out with 97, 98 Cherokee parts (From an I-6 as well) because apparently they were the same engines.

danhauer took a look at that website, I couldn't found anything to help me. the closest thing I've found to what I'm looking for is 4.0 out of 99' WJ. does anyone have advice on any conversions I will need for dropping this one in?

USNMaA Check out a site called novak-adapt.com
Whole website is devoted to engine swaps.

Search google. I haven't done a swap. But when I was looking up ones for my jeep, I came across that the grand Cherokees 4.0l would fit. Now, I wouldn't take my word for it. Go look it up, I'm sure many people have asked the same questions as you(:

this is incorrect if we consider the details.

for a 2000 TJ, you'll need a 00-06 block from a WJ or TJ. There are differences from the earlier versions...for example, the heads are different and the water pumps are different from what you have now.

I'd shoot for a 02-04 if possible. That should ensure you get a TUPY revision 0331 head, with the tapped bosses for the coil rail, and all the sensors should be the same.

TJ Engine Swap

I threw a rod in my 4.0 I6 (00' TJ) and I wanting to know if any AMC 4.0 will work for a swap, I know that Jeep has been using the 4.0 for a long time and if all will work whether out of a Cherokee or earlier model Wranglers?
