I'd like to remove the spare tire carrier and akward 3rd brake light. Since I won't have a spare mounted to relocate the brakelight i've been toying with doing something like this:

Floating 3rd Brake Light
My 3rd brake light relocation started with painting more of the black parts on my Wrangler. While searching the forums for how to disassemble the 3rd brake light, I came across this post which of course changed my plans...
I bought the same light (4" sealed running board light - Blazer part #C535R), but instead of the angle brackets, I decided to use a leftover piece of lexan we had. Fortunately, the 3rd brake light mount was very easy to take off my TJ, just 4 bolts and pull the wiring.
By making paper templates first, tracing the inside of the spare, and a bit of trial and error, I came up with my plastic bracket. I think this lexan is my new favorite material to work with! Cut with my dremel, drill bits, and paddle bits, then I filed and sanded the edges. The two large holes at the bottom fit tightly over the heads of the wheel mount, so only one hole needed to be drilled to bolt the new light bracket in place:
Mounted the new light onto the new bracket, using a center hole to pull the wires through:

I agree. Drivers have learned to expect and subconsciously look for a third brake light.
I fabricated my whole third light and mount because it was not there at all when I got the Jeep.

|Sccafire||For those of you in CA a third brake light is not required. CA consideres the third brake light as a supplemental light. I have not had mine on for 7 years. I did some reseach on this when I removed mine to make sure it was legal. On anoither forum someone asked CHP because they wanted to make sure what I found was right. CHP told them the same thing I did.|

|Bobs Jeep||The bolts on my third brake light bracket were long enough already. I loosen them, stuck a scrap piece of 1 X 4 board under the bracket and tighten it down. Added some hockey pucks to move the rubber snubbers out and called it a day.|

|ed98208||Thanks for the advice. The lack of fit was per the guys at the tire store...I'm not sure how much of a clearance problem there is. When the kit arrives I'll raise up the third light first and if the tire's still hitting the bumper I'll see if I can get away with longer screws/a few washers to minimize the extension, or look into a new mount altogether.|

And that you say your 31" spare won't fit is a mystery. The Rubicon comes with the metric equivalent to 31" tires from the factory and it uses the same spare tire mount your TJ has.

- Myself and others have been carring oversize spares for years without tailgate issues (myself 5 years 33x12.5)
- All you need to do is make a few spacers out of anything (washers, pipe, tubing, wood) to rause it up. No big deal. When I had my thirs brake light, without raising it, my tire did not get in the way.

A 33" tire only requires the 3rd brake light sit up about 1" taller to clear it. You can easily take care of that with $1-2 worth of longer screws and three 1" spacers available at any hardware store. Remove one of the screws and match its thread size up at the hardware store with 1" longer versions which will likely be metric. They'll have 1" spacers too, that's all you need.
Personally, with all the drug and alcohol impaired or inattentive drivers on the road, I'm a strong believer in the 3rd brake light whether it is required by state law or not. Anything to help those inattentive/impaired drivers see my Jeep easier and that I'm on my brakes sooner is a good thing in my book.

|Zjones1994||Problem with those is (for 33s, 31 youl be fine) is it puts more weight out and will cause even more stress on the tailgate hinges. I really need to upgrade to some kentrol black ss onee but they arnt cheap.|

|ed98208||My 31" spare doesn't fit so I just bought one of these sets on eBay ($47) for both extending the spare tire mount and raising the third light. I assume it'll hold the tire out far enough to allow the wiper to move freely, too. We'll find out when it gets here.|

3rd brake light
I have a 33x12.5 on the stock carrier (for now) and i was wondering how to raise the 3rd brak light up? Also the tire shoves the 3rd brake light close to the windshield and my windshield wiper gets stuck. Any advice?
