Just got back from the mountains ... as promised here is the report on Grapevine Canyon:
I don't know where the "moderate" rating came from. It is "easy" for a 4x4 IMO ... but does come with it's own set of challenges for a 2WD. My assessment... doable for a 2WD (because I never shifted out of it). HOWEVER, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT FOR A FULL SIZE PICKUP. It gets pretty tight in spots; Narrow roads (some washed out ledges make it even narrower) and at one point there was a hefty sized rock exposed in the middle of the road that would be fun with a Jeep ... but would a 2WD vehicle would need to go around it. Not sure that a full sized pickup would fit ... I chose to go around because my Liberty doesn't have the clearance ... and I had about 4-6" to spare. That was going up ... coming down shouldn't be a problem so long as the truck has adequate clearance. To boot there is a lot of soft sand which could prove difficult for a 2WD pickup.
All in all it is a fun drive and I would recommend anyone go just for the views alone. But 2WD Pickups I would steer towards Coxey instead. They would definitely come off the hill feeling accomplished.

|WOKNROX||I didn't realize they had put a gate at Bear creek ...I guess its been minute sence I've been through there ....but even if the gate was closed when they got to the creek, its still a good long run even if they had to turn around and backtrack ...|

Another good run is 1N09 off 330 its just north of the passing lane and a few turns after the Rangers station to the right..its a beautiful drive along the front of the San Bernardino mountains and above Highland with lots of sites along the way. U'll come out on hwy 38 just north of 7 oaks right around Jinks lake...and the girl scouts camp....check it out ....!
O and one more thing...u'll pass by little Bear creak witch comes from Big Bear dam...the best part is its all in front of the Mountains so u'll save a lot of time driving to the trail head...

Grapevine is "moderate" (because it gets narrow in spots and has some switchbacks) in one small section but otherwise "easy"... I'll let you know if any erosion or tight spots would make it hard for your group ... I will have a Tacoma PreRunner and a 2WD Commander (I didn't know they made them) in my group ... plus I will be in the wife's Liberty
Grapevine has some awesome views of the Desert and some pretty big rock outcrops that are fun to get out and climb on ... I like taking this way because it's the fastest way for me to get up into the pines from the desert ... plus the transition from desert to forest is pretty dramatic ... good way to come down too ... just hook a left on HWY 18 and you'll head into Apple Valley/Victorville and can get on the 15 to head down the hill
If Grapevine is not a good option then there is Coxey ... Coxey is rated "easy" and is well traveled and altogether shouldn't be a problem for a big truck ... so long as the road isn't washed out ... I'll double check if I have time
Either which way you take to get there ... From Crab Flats ... From Baldwin Lake ... or from the desert via coxey/grapevine ... 3N16 is definitely the end goal here ... Everyone in your group will have a blast

I second Rob on Crab Flats/Holcomb Valley ... 3N16 is definitely the road you want ... it's passable even for cars but has enough ups and downs to still be fun ... There are different ways to get there .... I'm actually leading some 2WD buddies up there this weekend ... I'm taking them up Grapevine (4N16) and down through Holcomb ... Coxey (3N14) is another option to enter/exit the SBNF ... Both Coxey/Grapevine will dump you off on HWY18 outside of Lucerne Valley
Coxey and Grapevine can get pretty rutted from time to time and has some soft spots and loose gravel ... if it is washed out might require 4x4 in spots but most often is passable for 2WD with good ground clearance ... I can let you know how they look after this weekend if you are interested

|JeepHerz||Make sure to check the big hill on Cleghorn for big truck clearance while you're mosey-ing. (I am up for a mosey too.) Easy for Jeeps but I've seen a Pathfinder, a Tacoma and a Raptor struggle on the "easy" bypass to the right because of size and tires. That F350 will be a tight squeeze if he can't make the center run.|

WOW land yachts AHOY... welp belay my last and all that other nautical jibber jabber.
On the road to McIntire they would kink the sides of those yachts as the road is extremely toight.

What I was going to suggest. Cleghorn and all of Pilot Rock is easy if you stay on the fire roads, and skip the side trails.
