MCE Mike I love the way the 40 series Flowmaster sounds on the 4.0s, and even sounds good on my 2.5L. It does get a little "buzzy" at higher RPM but then again it is a 4 cyl.

crazyredneck I was running around with my muffler cut off for about a month, then I bought a glass pack for my 2.25 inch pipe and just welded it on there, I told them (local oreilly's) just to get me the cheapest no name that had the off set. It is to quite now. The only reason I purchased the glass pack was to give it a little better tone. A few hundred miles from now it might start to get a little louder.

Also on that same JP mag. section/article top of page click on TECH tab & look for the exhaust shootout article in engine tune/ upgrades/tests sec. I think its page 4 (its in 03/09) magazine.

doclouie I prefer the flowmaster 50 series over the 40 series as it is a little quieter, but that is just me.

boomer27127 I had a magna flow catback on my jeep when I bought it and it had a decent sound to it. it was deep but not overwelming. after I put on my new lift I had to redo the exhaust and had a shop do a flowmaster super 44 with 2.5 inch pipe. the flowmaster is quite a bit deeper and louder. If I had to do it again i would look into a spintech muffler and just have a shop run the pipe.

apexkw anyone have experience with the MBRP exhaust?

Jeepzcb09 i just want loud and deep, and i just seem to decide which i like best, it seems some days I like Cherrybombs the best and other Flowmaster 40's, i just cant decide

s3nt3nc3d This is my old truck with the 3.9L V6...yes, different engine, different sound I know. Like I mentioned, my friend also had a YJ with a Flowmaster 40 on it. Our friends all agreed that my truck sounded more like a V8 than his Jeep... so if my truck doesn't impress you much (didn't impress me much...IMO...was loud and throaty at idle, but annoying and droned at cruising speeds--some folks complained they got a headache if I cruised at 60mph which is where the drone was worst, and also sounded very ricey in the upper RPM range.

JIMBOX I've gotta add some credence to the Flowmaster guys

On my '08 JK I replaced the stock muffler with a Flowmaster 40 dual cat-back and installed it right in front of the evap cannister

Now after a year of breakin, it rumbles and raps kinda like a cherry bomb

It is well worth your money, to get the Flowmaster 40

There is no HP increase, no MPG increase, but the sound is kinda KEWL !!!

adawg38 x2 Magna Flow on my 2.4L 4cyl. I just put on the muffler and it sounds awesome, nice and deep not ricey.

SurfNaked2010 I will always go with flowmaster and the way it makes a wrangler sound is amazing here is a link to the exact setup i have. After the midpipe i cut off my Cat and just put a 2.5" pipe from the headpipe to the 40 series than another 2.5" to the tip it sounds awesome. when i first put it on with my cat still connected it gave it a nice rumble but when i took the cat off what a difference! yes i know its illegal but my jeep isnt street legal anyway lol its too big for my states laws and i have to pay a friends friend for an inspection sticker anyway so might as well do what ever i want and ge the best bang for the buck since im paying for a sticker. gabeinaz For the 4 cyl guys who were asking, I'm using a Magnaflow muffler/ cat with my 2.5, stock diameter tubing and it doesn't sound ricey, as verified by "V8 only" friends of mine. And thats a tough audience...
Its a little brassy at first but mellows into a nice sound

I had it all

I had a set of Borla stainless steel headers going into a high flow Cat and then a 40 series Flowmaster. It sounded great and only wore out the cat a muffler once in 15 years.

burton160w Stainless Steel Cat-Backā„¢ System | 140103 | Jeep Wrangler 4.0L 6cyl - BORLA® - The World's Most Winning Exhaust

That's what I have, the Borla cat-back system. It's pricey, but it's got a real deep rumble and a throatier high-end. I'd say it sounds closer to a v8 would. My ONLY complaint is the tailpipe is UGLY as sin and on mine will be changed once the weather gets hot out. But other then that two (thumbs) up to Borla!

The glasspacks reviews are pretty bad. I mean, for me, I feel Cherry Bombs are generally slightly ricey. The Flowmaster 40s are real deep and throaty at the low end, but rev 'em up and to me they get to be fart cans.

Eh, mufflers are overrated, take 'em off and run a straight pipe

whiteyj Flowmaster 40 series....

s3nt3nc3d I ran both a Dynomax super turbo and a Flowmaster 40 series on my old Dakota with the 3.9L V6...

Flowmaster could set off car alarms and had an amazing rumble at idle...but once you hit the upper RPMs, it got ricey.

The Dynomax had a nice rumble at idle and was still throaty in the upper RPMs but it was pretty quiet compared to the Flowmaster.

My friend also had a YJ with the 4.0L and a Flowmaster 40...it was a lot louder than stock, but it really didn't sound all that impressive. Reminded me of my truck, but had a more ricey tone when he got on it.

I'd recommend the Banks Monster Exhaust from what I've heard on youtube...

Jeepzcb09 im trying to decide what i want, I have came down to 3

1.Dynomax-cat back system
2.Cherrybomb Glasspack'
3.Flowmaster 40

I want it to be loud and mean, i dont give a F**k about noise lol

Twozerofd Go with the complete Banks system. I put it on my 6cyl. Banks intake, Header pipe, Monster exhaust. A few weeks ago a cab driver asked me if I had a "race car motor in that shit" The whole system is expensive, but when all said and done it sounds nice and deep, and has given me adequate power to push the 35's for quick acceleration and on the highway at speed.

I have dual glasspack cherrybomb's on my 84 Dodge ram 150 and they are louder than hell. I always thought glasspacks sound better on v8's than on a v6 or I6

snwchris Check out youtube, I was just going thru this the other day looking at exhausts.

Search for Jeep Wrangler exhausts or individual names if you know. One bad thing about the vids on youtube, is that it's somewhat bias, because most of the time the mic is right by the exhaust. I only found a couple vids that it was placed a little bit away or even better a couple that people recorded while driving.

I'm considering either the Banks Monster or JBA since both are same price.

skippy i went with a $25 cherry bomb glass pack from ebay and the rusty exhaust to match. It cost total about $160 after having it welded on. I love the sound over time. At first it sort of sounded like a supra from fast and the furious but now it has a great "rumble" to it. There is a vid somewhere on youtube with a jeep that has the glass packs. That is why i bought mine.

3 mpg from a muffler? did that thing have an exhaust the size of a straw?
01-15-2009 12:58 PM
Jeepmanj20 I got a 12" long cherrybomb glasspack on mine. 2.5" pipe, sound great but is REALLY loud. I had a 26" one on there with 2.25" pipe and it was alot quiter. I wouldnt go with flowmaster. I personally dont think they sound good on anything, and I have heard there more for noise than flow. On the flowmaster site it say for vehicles with dual exaust, and people i know say it didnt help them out any. My cherrybomb gave me noticably more power and i got moe than 3 more MPG's. Just thought id give my 2 cents.

I had banks exhaust on my 2.5, it sounded a bit ricey, not too bad. I'm going to ask my buddy what he has on his YJ, 2.5. That thing sounds like a beast.

One more thing about the flowmaster 40 is that it is pretty quite, loud enough, but nothing too obscene. Makes revving in a parking garage alot of fun.
Please ask I would love to know
01-14-2009 09:43 PM
ExDementia It comes with all the pipe you need, but I also have a high flow cat and headers that aren't flowmaster.
