removing stock air cleaner completely ?

On my '88 YJ with the 4.2, I'd like to take off the stock air cleaner and replace it with a simple air cleaner with a K&N filter that sits on top the carb. But, I'm wondering just how big of a can of worms would I encounter doing away with the hose's that are attached to the stock air cleaner housing ? Input ?
