On my 97 half doors, the outside handle wouldn't open the door.
Pulled the door trim to have a look - everything was intact and moving OK.
Problem was, this clip had moved on the threaded rod. So while everything was moving OK, it wasn't moving quite far enough.
The metal clip was easy to pop off the threaded rod - moved it about 1/4" toward the door latch and clipped it back on.
The arrow shows where the metal clip was before I moved it.

|KaiserJeep||Yes, it could be lube-related. The other common cause is somebody used a "Slim Jim" to open a locked door, and bent one of the rods. That happens more often on full doors, because most people know how to unzip soft uppers to break in.|

|Coastie||definitely check for all of the cables, rods and what not to be attached. I recently traded my old headlights to a buddy for his half doors. They were off a 93 and in pretty rough condition. got them on and fitted and then a few days later they just wouldn't open anymore....handle would even stick open sometimes. Everything checked out mechanically. Took some brake cleaner to the mechanics inside (careful of your paint) to clean them up and now the doors work like they are new.|

|iadoin||I don't know if this helps but I had both doors go out on me and by go out, I mean you pull the handle and absolutely nothing. I took off the door panels and saw a cable popped off of the handle and I put it back in on both doors. I noticed that a clip that holds the cable in place was no longer there and whenever the door was closed hard the cable would just pop out.|

We had the same problem on my full doors, it almost seems like its locked?
We took the doors off and had to bang on the part that catches (forgive me, but I cant think of the word, just the loop part on the door.) We just had to bang the hell out of it until they lined up.
I apologize, as this really doesn't make a whole lot of sense, its hard to explain at midnight, I'm not thinking clearly.

Half Door Takes Multiples Tries to Open
So I have a half soft upper door on my 1999 Jeep Wrangler SE. Ever since I got it, the driver side door has been a PITA because it doesn't always open on the first pull. It wasn't too bad until recent, where it takes me 3+ pulls to open the door. It also only opens when i pull it a certain way (Up and push in the left side while pulling). The same thing happens on the inside door handle. Now it is almost a safety problem, as if i get in a crash, I'd be good to be able to open the door easily. I took the panel off of the door multiple times, but i cannot seem to see what is wrong with it. When i pull the handle, it seems like it either doesn't catch, or it does finally catch. So at first i thought maybe a rod in there is coming off of the pulley or something. Also (I don't know if this is directly related) the lock on the inside will not lock no matter how hard you push it. Any advice would be extremely appreciated. Tomorrow i can get a picture of the inside of the door if that would help.
