Depending on how mechanically inclined you are, you may want to consider taking it to a local Jeep shop or reputable local garage... not a dealership. Your steering is a safety issue, so I wouldn't want you to screw it up and have a wreck!
Have someone sit in the Jeep (while it is not running and the e-brake is on with rear wheels chocked) and turn the steering wheel from side to side a little while you look underneath for the area where the play is. My best guess is the tie rod ends are shot. I am sure that others will chime in here with more suggestions! Tie rod ends are probably the easiest part to replace. You should measure and mark the placement of the originals on the threads, so you get the new ones in as close as possible to the original location. You may need a BFH (hammer) to help persuade the originals (a little) to come off. Done this on trail repairs before and it's good enough to get you home and to a shop for a professional alignment. Try to find a local Jeeper to help... there is always one willing to help you wrench!

|chasm||Has your YJ been lifted? When a suspension lift is installed, it changes the steering geometry and makes you steering wheel alignment different. Some folks just leave it that way. Regardless, that doesn't have anything to do with the play. You need to look at all of the connections in the steering system to check for play and worn parts. Tie rod ends, bell crank, and so on. If they are dry, it may just need a little grease, but considering the age of the Jeep, it's most likely wear!|
