I've seen a lot of threads on diesel swaps in the forum, but I'd still like to find out the relative merits of CJ/YJ/TJ if anyone can help.

Also, spotted a rust-free '88 Wrangler for sale on Craigslist for $1,800 with a rod knock. This might be my start!

1988 JEEP WRANGLER NICE! daily driver 2 sets of doors etc

Thanks to any and every person answering!

Looking to get Jeeping

Dear Jeepers,

I've never been a motor head, but being kind of a no-frills guy, I've always admired the Jeep from afar. Now that kiddies are off to college, I want to get a Jeep. Here's the rub: I know little about the warhorses. I'm hoping some of the experts can clue me in on the relative merits of CJs, YJs and TJs for my purposes.

To wit:

I am looking for an in-town runabout with limited OR use. And more: I want to get a diesel conversion--I've heard Jasper engines and their authorized installers can drop a small Cummins in a Wrangler that is torquey, long-lived and gets decent mileage. I've heard the conversion is $7K to $10K, which I would be willing to do if I got a clean, rolling Wrangler for under $3K.
My questions for you:
  • What are the relative merits of CJ, YJ and TJ for these purposes?
  • Is the diesel conversion very doable for Jeep?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to look around the forum, too, to see what I can learn. It's great to be here!
Brian
