Hmmm. I grew up in far northern CA and if there was no gate and no no trespass signs I always drove on them and will continue to do so. Ran into a few rangers along the way and never had issues. I'd maybe find out if its govt land or logging company land. I'd think if its govt that would make it public lands and open to our use since we basically purchased and own that land through our taxes.

Most of them are legal to drive on. I drive on them all the time up here in northern california. But it also depends on where they lead. Google map them and see. But for the most part they are usually pretty safe to drive on.
