|muchomacho||what if you just disconnect the drive shaft and let the wheels just roll. I have towed my yj across country on the back of a pick up and didn't have any problems with it.|

|lavern23||You need to put the transfer case in neutral and the tranny in first gear. Putting both in neutral will starve the tranny of oil. Learned this the hard way.|

Yes, even though the body is a '52, it's got a brand new V6 and automatic transmission.

did anyone else have a double "function reject" moment while reading this, or is it just me?
"trans in park" and "unlock the steering" are both kind of wierd to associate with a CJ3

The process you described should work and is effective for short distances. However, for longer distances, it is generally recommended that you remove the drive shafts as they will spin (assuming no disconnects on front hubs) and cause the output shaft on the t-case to spin. When this happens you may not have enough moving parts in the T-case for it to be lubricated properly and can burn out bearings and seals.
Removing the drive shaft is fairly easy and should only take 10 minutes if you have easy access to your t-case.

Flat-towing a 1952 CJ-3a with a dead starter
I have a 1952 Willy's Jeep CJ-3a that is fully rebuilt (not by me). It was working perfectly until recently when out of the blue it would not start. I believe that the starter is dead, as the gauges light up and there is no noise as I try to start it. I replaced the batteries for good measure and it made no difference. A friend of mine suggested giving the starter a good knock or two as the solenoid might have a dead spot, however this made no difference either. I am at the point now where I feel that I should tow the vehicle to a mechanic as I am too busy and lack the knowledge to fix it myself. I have a Ram truck that I can tow the jeep behind and have an A-frame tow bar that the vehicle came with. I plan on 1) attaching the tow bar and making sure it is level, 2) connecting tow light wiring so as to be legal and safe, 3) put the transmission into neutral, then transfer case into neutral, then put transmission into park, and 4) put key in ignition to "on" position so that the steering is unlocked.
Does all of this sound ok? I have been reading some things online and occasionally it will say "start engine" which I unfortunately cannot do. Will my transfer case go into neutral without turning the engine on? Do I need to push the vehicle a couple feet or so to disengage anything?
I really appreciate any advice you can offer about towing or fixing my initial problem, which I am assuming to be the starter.
