|Dextreme||With the engine idling and squealing, pour some water directly on the belt. If it stops squealing, you know it's your belt. It might need to be replaced, but if it has a manual tightening adjuster (not a spring tensioner), you might try to tighten the belt.|

|Leachks16||I tried to hear where it was coming from but I couldn't find where it's is coming from exactly. It sounds like a pulley but would that explain why it increases with the engine rpms?|

|Leachks16||So I'm getting a squeaking sound coming from my engine and it just started with the cold snap that we had here in ohio. The only thing is that the squeak increases as the engine reves and it follows the rpms of my engine. Everything is brand new including the engine with only about 500 miles on everything. Any ideas?|

Well, after pulling, cleaning and inspecting all of the pulleys, replacing the belt, and adding a Lucas ps additive, I still had the annoying squeal! I then pulled the fan and fan clutch off and installed the pulley on without the fan to determine whether the fan clutch was the problem...again no dice.
After putting everything back together I started the engine and while listening to the squeal, I pushed on the air box on top of the intake manifold and the squeal tone changed. It turned out that the intake manifold wasn't tight enough and air was being sucked between the manifold and the engine! Tightened it up and no more squeal!!!!

Well, I removed the old belt, checked for any play in the pulleys and installed the new belt. After tightening everything up, I started the engine up and it started squealing again! The only thing else that I can think of is pulling the belt back off and spinning the alternator pulley and the power steering pulley to see if they spin freely....maybe one of them is on its way out?
Any other suggestions?

|nater344||I believe you are right gmarchant...I checked it last night and it seems a bit too loose (according to a friend of mine who is a mechanic). I'll have to manually adjust the tension, but I believe for piece of mind I will replace the belt first, then adjust the tension. Hopefully that will take care of the annoying squeal!|

|BSing||A bar of soap rubbed against the fan belt while it is running will usually stop the noise for some time. (just be carefull to not take your hand off like holding the soap on it.) If it solves the problem put a new belt on. If it doesnt is something else.|

|nater344||I wouldn't mind a squeal at startup, but mine stays on for awhile until I give it gas and then it starts back up when I let off the gas and and push in the clutch to stop. I'll pull the belt off tonight and check it over for any cracks and check out if there is any play in any of the pulleys and/or the fan. I'll let you guys know how I make out. Thanks for the help.|

|Joshpfeffer||Without hearing the noise, it's tough for anyone to say, but even with the belt in good condition, it could still be squealing. Maybe some of that belt lube spray that they make would help? I have an '07 Caliber that I drive daily and the belt started squealing on me all of the time, so I sprayed that belt lube on there a couple times (the first application didn't stop it for good) and I haven't had a problem in months.|

I had the squealing too, replaced the belt, tensioner pulley, and the idler pulley all at the same time so I do not know which one was the exact problem, but it did fix the problem. The pulleys are pretty cheap, that is why I replaced them at the same time as the belt.

|nater344||Thanks 4Point...that is something a will check into....of course after I check the notorious "low blinker fluid indicator", flush the system and add "synthetic blinker fluid", while being careful not to trip the "headlight fluid relay".|

Squealing Engine...Driving me crazy!
Recently my engine (upon startup) has been putting off a high pitched squeal. Originally the squeal was going away after the engine warmed up, but now it's squealing upon startup even when the engine is warm. The belt looks to be in good condition.....Any ideas would be appreciated.
