Dont worry about lifting it yet, take it off road till you learn driving it better and then lift when you need it.

|4point||A budget boost lift or no more than a 1 1/4" body lift is a great first timer kit. Even better is the two in combination. This keeps the investment low since most jeepers will upgrade to a bigger lift right after installing the first lift. The BFG AT is undisputed, the best all terrain tire on the market. It has the best wear and traction on and off the pavement.|

In terms of tires, I always reccommend Firestone Destination A/T and Goodyear SilentArmor's for mostly on-road and some off-road.
The 4-cylinder doesn't have much poke, and because you have to flog it a bit more, simply won't last as long as the 6. Still a solid setup for a beginner, though.
Safety wise, it's only as safe as the person driving. As skeeter said, it's not a race car- if you mind your speeds and keep the vehicle settled, it's perfectly safe. Also, keeping good tires under it and keeping up with basic maintenance will only improve this.
I'm a big fan of Tera Flex for lifts- great customer service, years of experience, and they really love what they do. I actually say start small (2-2.5" suspension lift), and 31's, and go from there if you NEED more height. Don't go big on your first-ever lift- you may start hating it right away and want to get rid of it. Keep your stock parts for just this reason (and if something breaks)- Mark W.

questions from an absolute newbie
So I wrecked my car three days ago and now I'm looking into getting a wrangler. I've always wanted one and before I bought the car that I just totaled, I almost bought one, so this is not an "on a whim" decision. Anyway, I thought I could ask you guys some questions. I'd be looking at a used one, probably from the mid to late 1990's to the early 2000's, and hopefully in the ballpark of $5,000-$9,000. I,m wondering about the mileage. I've heard some people say that as long as it is a V6, it will hold up into the 250k-300k mileage area. Any thoughts on that?
Also, anyone feel like the V4 is just a reliable as the V6, or vice versa?
I know it's not the safest vehicle on the road, but what about safety? anybody have any thoughts or experiences?
I would also want to get it lifted just a bit, maybe 2.5 or so with some bigger tires so I could actually take it offroading.
Any thoughts on a decent lift/tire combo that would be suited for both everyday commuter use AND offroading?
