Agreed. Go to your local stereo shop, and buy an in-line fuse holder like they use for bigger amplifiers, etc. Stinger makes a good one. They hold glass bus fuses that you can buy in fairly high amps.

sparky Your thinking is sound, normally any load connection to a battery would be fused, but I don't think winches are. The application is simular to the starter, you are going to have a very heavy draw and would need a very large fuse.

what size fuse?

just bought a Smity built 8k# winch, the instructions say just hook leads to battery, shouldn't the postive be fused? and what size fuse do I need to use?
