Transmission down shift concern

OK, Jane (so named Plane Jane because she is still stock) the jeep runs fine but has recently begun what I call hard down shifting when I release the gas. It is either from 3rd to 2nd (it is an automatic) or from 2nd to 1st, it downshifts with a noticible thud for lack of better words. You can feel it happen as it down shifts. More noticable when first driving but that may be that I'm just gettig used to it and after a few times I just barly notice. I have also noticed that when it sits for a few days it takes a minute for the transmission to engage. I am in Jacksonville FL and the weather is moderate and this is on roads no hills.

Any thoughts or experience from the more wisened of the Forum? I would call a transmission shop but I know what they woudl say...
