The only time I experienced DW was on a 3/4 ton GM D44 front with 38's. It had one of those Grant steering wheels with the metal spokes and I happened to be gripping the wheel at the bottom. My hand was black and blue for a week.

WrestleBetter Awesome. Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty good with a wrench, so I don't think I will have a problem fixing it. I just wanted to get a heads up on what I might be working on.

valk1999 I wouldn't say lack of maintenance. I am pretty good on maintenance and have had the dreaded "death wobble" attack me 3 times. The last time I had to take it to a specialist (axleboy) who changed out my ball joints, (even though they were within specs) and advised I get new tires (even though my bfg at's had plenty of tread.) I was 10 minutes away from buying an F-150! Jeep is running great now. My jeep has a 4" lift and I run 33x10.5r15 tires, nothing too agressive. If you have a problem you can't figure out , take it to a shop. Most likely though, you have a loose nut or bolt! enjoy your jeep.

bittercritter I've been a member of wf for over a year, read countless threads about dw, my buddy has had it in his xj but I've never seen it until I watched some youtube videos today. Holy crap, that's scary

Patrick H Just check all your control arm bushings, track bar (probably the most common culprit), tie rod ends, etc., etc. You know, all the things that should be checked and maintained on any vehicle. There's nothing magic, mysterious, paranormal, or amazing about death wobble.

Jerry Bransford Death Wobble is an UNBELIEVABLY violent shaking of the front-end that can only be stopped by pulling over & coming to a nearly complete stop. It is usually caused by a combination of things like imperfect tire balance to serve as a triggering even with something in the front-end being loose enough to let the triggering event develop into full-blown DW. If everything on the front-end is tight (like especially the track bar) and in good condition, that triggering event (out of balance tire, dip/bump in the road) will be dampened out & no DW will occurr.

Death Wobble?

I'm a new Jeeper, just bought my Jeep recently. I'm hearing things about death wobble. I'd like to get as much information about this as possible. I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death and beyond, but I want to hear it first hand. I have a 97 TJ, and I was wondering how concerned I should be, and what causes the wobble to begin with. Thanks in advance for your help guys. I appreciate it.
