Tahoe FWITW; Purchased my CJ-3B back in 2004/2005 for $5000. Excellent shape, still friends with the seller to this day. Recently sold my 2002 TJ with 130 K on the odometer in August 2012 for $12 K.

And then purchased my '78 CJ-5 for $4500. Mechanically sound, excellent overall condition. Showing only 70,000 miles on odometer, and from the second owner this is correct. For a 30 year old CJ it is in great shape, just mostly cosmetic (paint) issues. Drove it from the purchase back home, Bryan/College Station to Houston with no problems.

Just take your time, research the jeep, and climb under it/over it/inside it.

They go back so far...

25-35 old jeeps are worth... what ever condtion their in.

Condtion dictates Price. There are some old CJ-s that are
worth $10,000. Some that still go but are rough for $2500
Then there are the basket cases... whice take a labour of
love to make them go.

You need to take a hard look at your rebuilding skills, a place
to do it, and tools to restore it with. Not to mention, The time!

How do you fit it in, to your needs and wallet? Only You know That.
