WranglerGuy25 It looks like I'm late to the party on this, but I have a 98 Sahara and I'm wondering how possible/impossible/impractical it would be to install a pioneer AppRadio. AppRadio 3 (SPH-DA210) - In-Dash iPhone® and Android™ Compatible Car Receiver with 7" Capacitive Multi-Touchscreen, DVD/CD Player, Bluetooth®, MirrorLink™, and On-Screen Access to Compatible Apps | Pioneer Electronics USA

Not afraid of custom wiring or changing the bezel.

Steev, you sir are a master with bondo. I wish this forum had a thumbs up button for posts.

steev Two months later, finally another update!

I decided that it would be easiest to mold the trim ring of the monitor into the dash itself. It would give me the clean look I’m going for and I wouldn’t have to worry about rigging up some kind of brackets to mount the monitor. In case anyone is questioning the weight of the monitor putting stress on the dash and cracking it, it’s not going to happen. The monitor is super light. So out came the dremel once again! I glassed it in, added some filler, primed, spot filled, sanded, primed again and finally plasti-dipped. Came out pretty good if I do say so myself! I left the mini USB port and will hook it up to the carputer when I do the final install.

JAngeli What double-din is that with the removable faceplate?
06-08-2013 11:25 AM
benbrabbin You may notice there are 2 different stereos in the pictures. Two nights after I initially put in the Double din stereo someone broke in and stole it so I took the opportunity to get a new one with an alarm and improve the dash as it wasnt very smooth.

benbrabbin Here is a link to my dropbox folder with all of the pictures from my install. I dont think I have the finished/painted picture in there but you can tell what it will look like wih my primered picture. I also have a few pictures from my power door lock install. Its hooked in with my security system so its pretty awesome. I had to wire in some relays for it to work with it.

benbrabbin Thanks for the help. I used your guide for the bondo and stuff but I used a double din mount for a JK to mount the stereo so it is mounted to the frame instead of the plastic and bondo dash. Its working out great. I also found that sandable paint helped smooth it out as I didnt bondo over the whole dash and initially you could kind of see the change in texture.

Jimmy 007 Thanks doc for the reference to installing the radio. The thing is though I have an RB2 factory radio from a Cherokee 2012 and I need to get the wiring harness to install it. Can you tell me where I can get one? I have looked everywhere

Double din deck into TJ electrics

Hi guys,

Just wanted some advice regarding the electrics for putting a 2011 model double din deck into a 1997 TJ. Will it require modifying the existing wiring? Do I need to get a lumen set specifically for the plugs and points as I have seen some sets on eBay. Anyone know?

DocterWrangler yes it will fit refer to the first post for how to

Retro fit double din deck

Hi guys,
I have a TJ 1997 wrangler and have managed to get my hands on a late model double din deck (2011 I think) and I want to know if I can install it in my car? Do I need to get a lumen set and if so where can I get one. Just want to know if it is possible as it would be an awesome addition to an already awesome car! Any ideas?

steev UPDATE!

I get bored pretty easily, so I felt it was time to change things up. The Kenwood headunit was pulled and sold to a friend. I decided a while back that I wanted to build a carputer or put a tablet in the dash. For a number of reasons, I settled on the carputer. I've been gathering all of the parts over the last few months and finally have just about everything I need. First order of business was getting the Lilliput EBY-701 touch screen monitor to fit. It comes in a double din trim ring, but still required a bit of trimming to get it to fit in my dash. Height was spot on, but width was a bit too narrow. Nothing a dremel, some fiberglass, bondo and lots of sanding couldn't handle! I'll keep this thread updated if there's any interest.

MudDemon Looks awesome man. Like something a high end shop would turn out and charge a sh@**#ad of money for.

benbrabbin Im in the process of doing the dash with fiberglass. Im using the bondo fiberglass resin kit I got from advanced auto. I cut out a dvd case and glued it in to take up the sides and then just filled it in with the resin mix. I think its going to turn out ok. Ill take pictures as i go and post when im done.

LilYeller Heres my version. I did what I could with the tools I had.

I cut out the plastic piece thats above the AC controls, that allowed me to drop the whole unit down and fit under the AC vents without getting bent up. BTW yes I covered the holes in the sides with velcro lol, when my ABS plastic comes in I will use that instead but this works for now and it really isnt as noticable as it is in the picture.

benbrabbin I did mine last weekend on an 04 TJ. I didnt do the bondo or fibergalass though. I used an 08 install kit and mounted the double din with that. With the double din mounts I just cut a square that just squared off right at the curves of the dash. I used a saw for that. Then I Used a power sander to smooth it out. I ended up a little crooked at the top but it works. I think I might do this to make it a little more stock looking.

Anatak It appears to be bowing below the vents. I would like to offer a suggestion, if you want to avoid encountering possible issues with other radios. Especially if you're going to be sending modified bezels across the country.

Reinforce or replace the remaining strip, located below the vents and above the radio with fiberglass or steel flat stock. Then clean up the look by using fiberglass cloth and/or a putty filler.

After installing a Kenwood DDX-812 in a Ford F250; I found that even the aftermarket install kit needed modified to allow the tilting screen from getting stuck. The flimsy header was allowed to bow and catch the top of the screen frame.

Thanks! Finally got it reinstalled again last week after six months. Had to replace the LCD screen on my radio.

Still not 100% happy with it though, so it will be pulled back out this weekend (hopefully) and redone.
