JimsJeep Looks like your pinion seal is leaking. Pretty easy fix, you will need a new seal which most parts stores will carry, and a seal remover which looks like a thin claw hammer with a hook on each end. Make sure you mark the driveshaft with a marker so it is installed back in the original position. The clutch is clearly up to something you will probably have to replace it. The smokey/greasy smell is a concern and could possibly be a seal on the trans. you could try removing the inspection plate and take a look see and feel around for any lubricants. If there is a leak the clutch is compromised and will have to go.

PA Blondie The Jeep has just under 160K. I believe it is the original clutch, the guy I bought it from didn't say.

Jerry Bransford How many miles are on the clutch? The TJ's clutch seldom needs replacing until it gets close to 200k or more miles.

Where is the front axle leaking from? The front differential cover or the from the pinion shaft near to where the driveshaft connects?

Clutch and front differential question

New to dealing with a clutch. I noticed that when driving I get a grease/smokey smell, a friend drove the Jeep for a test drive and said the clutch feels loose compared to his car. I know each vehicle is different but, I'm worried that the clutch might be going out.

The front differential is dripping, not sure if it needs to be resealed or if it's overfilled... I can post pictures if that helps
