Tarby If yours is rusty, it may not want to move...mine was clean and slid down without much effort...Just grabbed it with a pair of vise grips tight and tapped it with a big rubber mallet and she telescoped down out of the way to do the work. Might need to replace the steering shaft, had to do that on my one plow jeep cause it was pretty crusty.

deewoody Thanks Tarby. I removed the clamp bolt from the upper part (near the ubolt), and tried to get the shaft to go down. Even sprayed some juice on it to help it move . It still wouldnt telescope down. Did you have to hit it repeatedly with something ?

Tarby I did mine without removing the steering box...just collapse the shaft after you remove the steering shaft u-joint. All you have to do is remove the air box and all it's components to get a good line of sight and wrenches in.

jokerchief462 Here is the thread I used it was excellent. Get a kit on Ebay I found mine $16 free shipping. When you remove the bolts from the steering gear box and go to reinstall you will need another set of hands neighbor and a beer will do but someone has to hold the upper shaft in place to realign the box to the frame. If you need anything you don't find in the thread let me know.

lower steering column bearing replacement

Hello all,
been awhile since i've been on ! I have done a complete makeover on my Yj since ! It looks great now ! I do have an issue with the steering wheel making a noise when i turn to the right... i noticed that the lower steering column bearing is pretty much gone! lots of play in the column in that area . Can someone tell me the best way to replace the bearing assembly? i appreciate any help
