0III0forlife I have been turning a wrench for the past 35 yrs, and I wouldnt attempt to rebuild a trans myself. Maybe you will have better beginners luck if you choose to go that route.

But, I know that 1 thrust washer or synchronizer put in backwards and it will mean major problems. It should be done by a qualified proffessional only.

From what you have said, it seems that the synchro's are going in a few gears, so a swap or rebuild would definately be in order. I myself would choose taking the chance on getting a used trans from a salvage yard over the cost of having one rebuilt.

What Next for AX 15 Transmission

Been having some minor transmission problems on my 91 YJ 4.0 AX15. Drained the oil and found lots of gold colored bits on top of the drain pan.

Symptoms that caused me to do some checking: 1. Grinds a bit going into 5th. 2. Downshifting, grinds going into 3rd and moderately into 2nd. 3. If rolling backward, clutch pushed in and in 1st, "bumping" of shifter and odd sound.

I've searched the forum and have determined that I will have some replacing to do. My question is how much. Should I go through the transmission completely as in overhaul (I've never done this)? Looking at videos and such, it seems my only recourse. Any advice is appreciated.
