I swapped a '96 XJ axle into my '97 TJ easy..
Even found the matching gear ratio for my '97, 3.55.
I ran this setup for a couple of months until I got my Rubi44 completed. I then swapped in a re-geared XJ HPD30 (with matching 4.10) and the Rubi44.
I didn't have to change the front driveshaft at all, as a matter of fact, after lifting the Jeep AND swapping to a HPD30, I have about the same driveshaft angle as pre-lift, and thus, the slip-yoke is almost the same as stock.
Supposedly, the reverse rotation D30 realizes a stronger gear set... I'm not sure about this, but sounds possible.

Here is some more infor:
Look for XJ's that had the 4 banger they will have 4.10's in there.. so no swap needed.
Look for a 93 and newer XJ axle they don't have the center axle disconect.. The cut off for the HP was 1999, though you may find a few 2000's out there.
The rear axle fwiw right around 1997 changed for some models to the Chrysler 8.25 with 29 splines vs the dana 35. this is good for 33's with a locker. ALso its better than some early examples which came with 27 splines. Down side, spring over setup, and limited lockers to pick from.
In additon, you may need to mod your front drive shaft if you go with a HP XJ axle

|aquaholic||so i found a low pinion in a 2000 xj for $250 locally at a junkyard. will that directly swap into my buddies 98 tj? i'm talking brakes/line and all. just plain bolting the entire setup into his tj (and swapping his 4.10 tj gears into it).|

|aquaholic||the stick thread on jeep forum could be wrong. heres where i dug that info up on the xj axles. Cherokee stock specs - JeepForum.com|

|Jerry Bransford||I could very well be incorrect on all XJ front Dana 30 axles being high pinion but I sure thought they were.|

the info that i dug up said 00-01 xj fronts are low pinion. and, thanks for the advice jerry, i appreciate it. even if its not my jeep. this is what i dug up on the jeep forum sticky thread.
xj front axles
d30 front axle. high pinion 84-99 low pinion 00-01
axle joints 1995-2001 had 297 sized (larger and stronger) u-joints.

|Jerry Bransford||High pinion and low pinion gears are cut differently so you can't swap his LP gears into the HP XJ D30. All XJ front Dana 30 axles are high-pinions, all TJ front Dana 30 axles are low pinions. So XJ and TJ D30 ring & pinion gears are totally incompatible with each other. The other parts like axle shafts, knuckles, carriers, diff covers, u-joints, etc. are interchangeable.|

|aquaholic||right. my fault. i meant dana 30. if his tj axle is a low pinion and the xj axle is high pinion will his 4.10's swap into the dana 30 high pinion? will the front driveshaft be long enough? i guess he could also go with an 00-01 xj dana 30 front axle which is a low pinion axle as well. sound about right?|

Dana 35 is a rear axle. And the answer on the rear axle is no it won't bolt right in from an XJ. There is the matter of all of the brackets to deal with.
Now in regards to the front axle.....Yes it will bolt right in. The only difference as Point stated is that a TJ is a low pinion housing and XJ is a High Pinion housing, so the gears will be different if they are being changed. Otherwise it's good to go. It's always good however to look for an XJ housing with no disconnect.

|4point||It should bolt right in. The TJ is not an HP diff, the XJ is. Its a better axle than the TJ D30. The rear axle would be the D35.|

xj front axle to tj front axle swap
does anyone know if you can direct swap an xj front axle into a tj? my buddy bent the front axle housing in his tj and is wanting to swap an xj axle into it due to the high price of tj axles. excluding changing the gears to match his 4.10 tj gears, would the axle (right down to the brake rotors and everything) be a direct bolt it. i would suspect his tj is a high pinion dana 35 so his xj donor axle would need to be the same.
