XDR I sanded the fitting not the hole. I raised my body 4", that would be the same as dropping tranny 4". Although mine is behind a v8 and may not be in same location of tranny tunnel but should be close.

jeepwayoflife Yep you are right. I looked tonight and my 2002 has the vent cap. I've been in pretty deep water but that was over 6,000 miles ago so I guess it didn't get in... I will be checking it out further tomorrow and will probably do this over the next few days. Thanks for the pics and idea.

Can this be done without removing the transmission and all? Would lowering it 4" or so be helpful? When you sanded the hole, are you talking about the hole on transmission? Didn't metal dust fall in? Thanks again

The part that slides into the transmission, very little material is removed to ensure a tight fit.

My son's '00 NV3550 has a vent cap also. OP thanks for the idea. We are doing a tub replacement on his TJ soon and will add this mod to our list. His Jeep has earned the nickname Nautilus cause he thinks it's a submarine. :/

jeepwayoflife I was told a while back the NV3550 did have a breather tube. I've been in water to the bottom of my doors. Loots like a fluid change is in order.

NV3550 Vent (New Method)

When searching for a method to remove the breather cap and install a vent on my NV3550 I found this site How To Waterproof Your Transmission - GETAHELMET.COM. I attempted his method and didn't like the fact that the fitting wasn't interference fit anymore and that it used a variety of metals (possible corrosion). So I got to thinking and looking and thought why not use a vent for the NP231? I also looked at the axle fittings. After spending hours under the jeep trying to figure out how to press it in I temporarily gave up. Now I have my body lifted due to removing weld nuts on the top rear shock it gave me more clearance. I got my micrometers out and measured the hole than the fitting, pretty close but the tapper is pretty steep on the fitting. I got my Dremel out with a sanding wheel and slowly removed some material (very minimal). Then I used vise grips on the fitting so I could hammer on them and press down on the collar of the fitting. It is a tight fit like it should be and looks like it should be there unlike the other method. Below are some pictures of the part and final install picture.
