Cranking not starting, cut back on then starts

New to the forums. We have a 2001 Tf 4 cylinder. Recently we hav e a cranking/starting issue.

Get in the jeep, it turns over and over and over but won't start. You can turn the key to the off position and immediately try starting again (cut key back to start position) and it cranks and starts immediately. Cut it off and try starting, it cranks and cranks and cranks. Try the off and back on and it starts immediately.

Only other info I have is that last week the gas cap was not properly locked and we had a P0455 code. Returned the cap ack like it should be, disconnected the battery and reconnected and the code went away. Two days later the code came back, but we have not put any more fuel in it since the first error code. The cranking issue started before this error code though.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.
