I'll let the experts chime in on the details, but in short, yes you will have better ground plane from a hood mount than a tail mount, and more equal radiation of transmission.
As many will attest, you can achieve a good plane from a rear mount, it just takes a bit more effort usually.
For trail riding, pretty much anything bigger than a duckie anywhere outside the cab is fine (as long as it is bonded well). A 2' on the tire carrier, 2' or 3' from the taillight or a 4' off the bumper should all do fine and give decent clearance for trees. That said, my 4' is on the front bumper, performs fantastically well, and sits just above the roofline.

I can't comment on the ground plane concern, but I can say that I've not had an issue with antenna damage using a tire carrier mount.
I'm running a 4' Firestik Firefly antenna on top of a spring and the tip probably ends up close to two feet above the roof line. I've abused the crap out of it whacking in to trees and branches with barely enough clearance for just the Jeep and haven't had an issue yet.
Just something to consider. I'd also be interested in seeing fender/hood mount pictures for a JK.

CB Antenna Mount Location
Anyone have their CB antenna mounted on the fender/under hood? I've been doing some researching, reading the threads, etc. but don't see anyone using this location. Most folks seem to be using the spare tire or license frame mounting option. I'm looking at a fender mount for a couple reasons. First, if I hang it on a limb or something, I'll see it before it snaps (hopefully). Second, wouldn't it get more ground plane reflection away from the soft top? Reflect off the hood and/or windshield?
Main use will be for the trails, so range won't be incredibly important. I do spend a bit of time on the roads. The Jeep is my DD, so it could be useful for work as well.
I'm just thinking this thru and trying to figure out what would work best for me. Any input would be appreciated. If someone is running a setup similar, photos of the mount would be appreciated.
