Yes, how well though, I'm not sure. Not that old :P That jeep you're looking at was created when I was born.
I've thought about dealing with a carb'd jeep-a completely restored cj-7-but not as a daily driver.
|06-17-2013 01:15 PM|
|laurenliz||Would a conversion kit take care of that?|

|jeff_in_rc||FI means Fuel Injection, the carb on some of the I6 motors can be a PITA from what you can read here.|
|06-17-2013 12:59 PM|
n00g7, Sorry, dumb question. FI?
ChicoJeepy, I'm glad you said that. I was planning on talking it down to the 4,000 range because of the mileage. But I wasn't sure if that would be too low of an offer.
|06-17-2013 12:54 PM|
|ChicoJeepy||I agree with the stock theory also. I found this 93 YJ up in Red Bluff CA for $3700. Sound motor, no rust, 119K miles and smogs. It was an amazing jeep, heck the guy even let me drive it around the block and I was sold. Offered him 3100K and he took it. Best rig I've ever bought! The guy was an older gentleman that was county, he said, "This Jeep will turn heads and drop panties." Well it turns heads but the last part I'm still trying to find out|
|06-17-2013 12:49 PM|
|ChicoJeepy||Lauren, That Jeep is smoking hot! Close to 200K miles tho I would ask him/her if they are firm on there price. Personally that Jeep is a 4000-4500 but if it's close to you and is mechanically sound, go for it!|
|06-17-2013 12:45 PM|
|n00g7||Well, if it were me, I'd look for a FI one.|

1987 jeep Laredo
Checking this girl out tonight. Any thoughts? Anything I should be concerned about from what's in the ad?
|06-17-2013 11:14 AM|
|mbannin||It's very likely that anything you find in your area will have some real rust problems. I live in Idaho and just bought a '94 YJ that has never left the state. There isn't the slightest trace of rust anywhere, so you might want to consider a YJ from another state. (BTW, my in-laws all live in the Port Arthur area, and I have seen a lot of their vehicles with rust problems.)|
|06-17-2013 11:05 AM|
|87YJnTX||seen a 88 listed on southeasttexas.com the other day......its around the Beaumont area...........|
|06-17-2013 12:28 AM|
Not defending the sellers, but I've had many vehicles I wouldn't sell to someone that wasn't mechanically inclined. I'm normally nicer about it, the the end result is the same. Of course, I'll adjust the price accordingly, and be completely upfront about it, but still.
I agree, going stock is the way to go. A good thing about YJs is that if you're wanting to learn to wrench a bit, they're easy to learn on.

I got lucky, but I also learned something. If you can find a stock or nearly so jeep, the person should be a lot nicer (and not inflate the price, too). I saw a '93 sahara with a cheap body lift on 33s and new bumpers. Guy selling it was terrible and asking 10k, not negotiable. Same for a few others.
Finally found a stock jeep for just under blue book value being sold by a really nice girl. I found stock or close is the way to go, if you can find it.
|06-15-2013 09:13 AM|
I've been amazed about how many people have acted just like that guy (though not QUITE as bad). I guess that's why they're selling their jeeps.
Thanks for the posts, everyone. They were VERY helpful. I'll keep looking, and I'll wait for the right one to come along.

Wow this is crazy! He is giving jeepers a bad rap. I was in the same boat as you - it took me over a year to find my YJ and it was right under my nose 1 0 minutes up the road! 6k is definitely a good budget, that was my budget and the jeep I found was absolutely incredible!
As others have said, be patient and the right one will find you!
|06-14-2013 11:59 PM|
laurenliz, that idiot definitely was wrong. I work with dozens of REAL mechanics, and none of them would be ashamed to have another look at their work to make sure nothing was missed. Also, there's things that mechanics will see on a lift with proper lighting and other tools that you're not going to see rolling around in the dirt.
My guess is that he had something major wrong and tried to intimidate you into buying it without it being looked at by someone who would see it. I hope whoever buys it runs over his toe on the way out.
|06-14-2013 11:40 PM|
|jfbilbro||first off, don't panic....just keep looking and YOUR jeep will find you....it really is like that.....6 grand is a real good budget for a yj.....you should find an extra nice one for that amount.....and don't worry about those jerks like the one that made you mad.....if they won't let you take the jeep to a mechanic (for any reason) there's probably something they're hiding....I had to go from Alabama all the way to Maryland to get mine, but it was the best move i made...i LOVE my jeep now that i have it the way i want it....|
|06-14-2013 05:08 PM|
Don't let a few things get you down. If you want the jeep bad enough, you'll get it. I had several people tell me why don't you just get a truck? Because I want a damn jeep. Took me several long hour searching, looking at lots of jeeps and lots of reading.
And I finally got my jeep. It wasent easy, but it was worth.
And I love my 23 year old jeep that sputters sometimes and squeals on occasions more than anything in the world.

|laurenliz||Mr.Mud, Looking at around $6000 right now.|
|06-14-2013 04:26 PM|
|laurenliz||Great! I've run into that problem several times. I'll definitely let you know. Thanks!|
|06-14-2013 04:26 PM|
|Mr.Mud||ill let you know if I spot any arround. do you have any budget in mind?|
|06-14-2013 04:22 PM|
|rykemc||Lauren if you find the one you are interested in and do not have a mechanic or anyone to check it out, send me a PM and I'll see if any of my friends down there can give you a hand at looking it over for you.|
|06-14-2013 04:14 PM|
I actually did check out Select Jeeps online, though I haven't actually driven out there. They tend to have stuff that already has any modification you could ever want already done. I feel like that's cheating. I want to put my own blood and sweat into it.
I just can't bring myself to settle for a TJ. I'm pretty attached to the YJs.
|06-14-2013 04:10 PM|
|n00g7||You could also look for TJ's... they are a bit newer and thus less likely to be "enthusiast" owned.|
|06-14-2013 04:06 PM|
|06-14-2013 04:05 PM|
|Mr.Mud||I see take a drive to league city and check out select jeeps.|

I'm in Houston. I obsessively check craigslist in Houston, DFW, Austin, San Antonio, and Deep East TX.
jeff_in_rc, yea that was kind of a jerk move on his part. His attitude completely changed from helpful and pleasant to superior and very unfriendly the minute I talked to him on the phone instead of over text. Not cool. I walked away from that one. But it did leave me wondering if there was any truth whatsoever to what he said.
|06-14-2013 03:50 PM|
Take your time and keep looking and if you run into those kind of guys again tell them as your walking away "hey dumba$$ you just blew the sale!" Then see what his reaction is. HA!
|06-14-2013 03:42 PM|
|Mr.Mud||What part of Texas are you in?|
