|Nerovoid||I go out there regularly with my JKU, most of the trails are easily accessible by 2wd however 4wd is preferred. There are plenty of trails with moderate mud puddles about 1-2ft deep however there are the torn up trails where it will drop to 3-5ft. Most of thoes however are along the power lines. I would definitely recommend a winch. The terrain varies from clay to sand, covering the forests, to sand dunes to even meadows. Now the camping is great, you actually rent out a camping area so most of the time you're secluded and the rangers are pretty chill. I like to get a bunch of the guys from the shops n their significant others and go out there and just have a great time along side the rivers. Now you do need the range pass from the Jackson Guard but that only costs $6 and a quick 15min video then the camping spots are generally $10 or $15 for every 10ppl I believe. Its been since last fall that I went camping out there.|

Also, there's a lot of marked, designated roads that have mud pits on them after a heavy rain.

This is a complicated question. I've been out there more times than I can count. I live near there and am stationed nearby, so both official and pleasure has brought me out.
The preserve requires that you have a range pass from the Jackson Guard. Prices vary... The main roads marked on the map are all clay maintained roads and 2wd is all that's necessary. My buddy used to go out hunting with his 2wd SUV quite a bit. I would say you could take most of the roads with 2wd... But 4wd makes me feel better. Buddies make me feel even better :P
Now... When it rains, the turn offs from the clay roads get SQUIRRELY. Like, huge mud lakes. And the ruts are so deep and concealed with pools of water, it's really easy to bottom out your diffs. Even my buddy with 35s has barely cleared a few. But the good news is, there's usually go around for those deep ruts. Googlemaps sat pictures is a great source of whether a trail is 2wd or not. If it's marked on the satpic, it's generally 2wd. If you can barely make out a rut road from the sat picture, it's probably a 4wd road.
Don't know what camp spot you're referring to, sorry. There's a lot of them, and they vary from popular to desolate, from easily accessible to fairly hidden. marked and unmarked.

|jeepnfool||Makes sure you get an eglin reservation map and stay on designated roads. Also, the "mud pits" as you refered to are off limits and if your caught in one it is an $80 Federal Citation plus admin fee which is $25 if I remember. Plus you will loose your pemit and if your active duty, usually a call to your Commander. Im a Retired Range Patrol Officer, so if you have any questions, I will glady try to answer them for you or point you in the right direction.|

Anyone planning to head out to eglin this weekend? I'm visiting Florida and we hit up a few of the trails (or "roads" according to the security man.) We had a lot of fun and even got stuck in a nice mud pit. Won't go out without at least one other Jeep.
Hoping to get a little group and head out on Sat the 10th or Sun the 11th anyone interested?

Eglin AFB Trails and Camping
Hey guys, I'm from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and have been looking around for a new place to go offroad and the trails at Eglin have peaked my interest. So for those of you that have been out there I've got a few questions:
1) Trail difficulty: Are there lots of ruts and deep mud holes? How deep are the water crossings? Would airing down be necessary?
2) I have a friend that has an early 90's 2wd Pathfinder, do you think he could handle the trails as well without too much difficulty? He's taken it through some mud over here and did just fine because he's good about staying on it, just wondering what y'all think about him trying it out over there.
3) What are the campsites like (crowded? usually empty?) and how close are they to the good trails?
4) Have any suggestions for good trails? I know there's tons of them out there.
5) Any suggestions for extra gear I'd need? (Should we bring extra gas? Tools? etc.)
Thanks for any help! Hopefully we can make it over y'alls way by the end of summer!
