106888 how hard is replacing the syncros without in an ax5 transmission without a press. what is the best tool to use other than a press. (im 17 and cant afford to buy a press and cant afford to pay someone to rebuild it and if i dont fix it my parents will make me sell my jeep)

1987Wrangler YJ Unbolt the pan drop it down, put a jack stand on the t-case. unbolt the fly wheel. disconnect all linkages, drive shafts vents, ect then put a jack under the trans pan. and unbolt the bolts that connect the bell housing to the engine then lower it down.

cakes567 I just droped my trans twice..., take the shifter out , undo drive shafts and so on. Then undo the bolts around your bell housing and loosen up the skid plate bolts. Put a jack right on the bottom of the skid plate and then remove the bolts for the skid plate. Slide then trans back and then drop it down. Helps with a second person. Also make sure you put something under the oil pan like a jack or a big block or something. It prevents the motor from tipping back and damaging things. Leaving the skid plate makes it easyer to handle because you can hold on to the skid plate and makes it easyer to move it around and stuff. I've done it both ways and leaveing it on is the easiest. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Transmission rebuild

in the next few weeks i am going to have to rebuild my ax5 transmission due to the 1st and 2nd gear syncros. my friend has a modified floor jack with a transmission cradle so i dont have to find a lift. when i unbolt the skid plate for the transmission will the transmission fall with the skid plate or is it supported by other means????? i really dont want the transmission to fall with the skid plate for personal injury reasons. any advice on removing the transmission will be appreciated.
