As for fluid, I use Penzoil Syncromesh. You can get that or go to the dealer and get the mopar brand.

Ok so my new transmission arrived today and will be installed on Monday! Woo hoo. Hope all goes well.
Wanted to get everyone's opinion on something.
The transmission the shop was trying to rebuild was installed then uninstalled.. Then installed and uninstalled again and then they gave up on that transmission. My question is... Would the new rear seal they used on the first transmission be still good to use on the new transmission? Or would the installing and uninstalling have weakened it ?

I am confused as to why the shop mechanic says he's "too frustrated to continue" That's his job. You took the Jeep in and it was in running, working order with some, what I assume to be, minor issues.
Now they pulled your transmission, and can't figure it out, or get it back together? That doesn't sound like a shop who knows what they are doing.. I'd look elsewhere for a shop to put the new one it you just bought.

My rebuilt nv3550 should be delivered by this Tuesday. Just wondering what brand fluid is the best. Or what are the top 3 or 4 choices just in case some are not available in my town. What would the dealership have? Anybody add Lucas when they change? Any suggestions?
Bonus question: what else would you do to the jeep while the transmission is off? New rear seal will be done.... What else?
Crossing my fingers that the shop doesn't screw up this transmission like they did my last one!

I have no idea about your problem but I'd recommend you to check multiple garages and get some quotes before accepting anything on a so called "good-name" basis.
Business is business ! They all know very well how to get your bucks !

|173ABN VN||I had a cj5 yrs ago and was having tranny problems.Had it rebuilt at least 4 times w/the same problem over and over.finally put a diff tranny in because the old one just wasn't fixable.thats why I say put a differant one in.if you say this is a good shop and they tell you to put another one in it and you have doubts then check them out w/the BBB or go online to Angies list or other sites.good luck w/your decision...russ|

Paid 6000 for the jeep
The shop specializes in transmissions and has been around for a long time. Even the dealership suggested them. And that's why I went there. When it comes to my vehicles I want only the best.
When I first went in he said it was an ax-15 and I corrected him and told him its the 3550. Maybe he went ahead with the ax15?. He told me after 2 weeks that he put it all together twice and now he's to frustrated to try it again so I should buy another one. It all seems strange to me.
I told him I wanted to go get the jeep but he said I can't because its all apart and I need to wait fur him to find me a used transmission.
I'm looking at a rebuilt transmission on eBay. It's from a company called highline. You guys hear of them? Looks good and its already rebuilt so I don't have to worry about the shop making a mess of this one.
Ill keep everybody updated . Ill be at the shop Monday and ill have some good questions for them.

|ztman||You say the shop is reputable. What makes you come to that conclusion? Sounds like they may be in over their heads. TJ transmission is a basic rebuild and if they are having trouble, might have a bunch of untrained circus monkeys working on yours|

120k KM that's like not even 75k Miles.. it shouldn't happen.. and i wonder why they even have worked on thr tranny..

|Smashbox||I'm just trying to figure out why the transmission in it can not be rebuilt. I thought a rebuild meant take out the old stuff and put in new stuff ! It was driving decent when I drove it to the garage. I'm looking at one on eBay that is already rebuilt. Not cheap but I want a transmission I can have confidence in.|

Ok so... 2 weeks ago I took the jeep to a reputable repair shop and they suggested I rebuild the transmission. I got the run around for 2 weeks and finally when I called today I was told that he tried to put the kit in 2 times and its now worse than it was before and he is blaming it on someone else who must have worked on the transmission in the past. He told me he will not try to do it any more and the transmission is out of the jeep and in pieces and that I should just buy a used transmission.
What would you guys do ?

|Smashbox||I would never down shift if I was going to fast to do so. But the reason I asked that question is because with my jeep.. If I'm slowing down and in neutral with the clutch pedal all the way down and I try to put the shifter to the 2ng gear positron while still holding the clutch down .. It grinds and my shifter shakes like crazy. This seemed abnormal to me.|

If you do accidentally downshift into the wrong gear, don't worry about it, if you notice it and correct it by pushing the clutch in and putting it in the right gear, you should be okay (I've done that before and the high-whirling of the rpms always get my attention lol). I wouldn't recommend making a habit of it though because eventually it will damage the engine/transmission/clutch.
If you're having a grinding sound with your transmission when you shift, when you give it gas, when you're idling, any time it makes an unpleasant noise, you should really take it in to get looked at, there's something loose in the transmission if it's making noise.
Now, mine was rattling whenever I was idling, and I asked my brother was the dealio was and he told me it was the compressor, so it was nothing to worry about. He had two duelly diesels (dodges) and they do the same thing, so I was a little proud of my little Jeep. .
Also, the grinding noise that I think you're talking about is also called 'grinding a gear', it'll happen when the clutch thinger doesn't match up with the gear thinger right and it literally grinds away at the clutch, or the gear thinger. . . I forgot what the terms are but definitely try to avoid grinding the gears. I know the Jeep has sychronizors so it makes it a lot easier to shift it into gear. I used to drive a car that had really bad sycnhronizors so I didn't even need to use the clutch to shift. lol
There's a picture of all the gears, the clutch will literally grind on those.
I'll grind a gear occasionally when I try to shift into reverse, it's very close to 5th gear.

I've only had my tj a month and am new to manuals as well but if is am going way to fast for a gear for example shifting from 4 to 5 but miss and go to 3 I hit some thing and it won't go into gear. I've never tried to push past it. As far as down shifting goes I have a long corner on a hill near my house. I generally break down to about 30 in 5th. That brings my rpms down to 1k then i down shift to 4 and cost down the hill in gear. I have never had a problem down shifting when my rpms were that low.

I had to get the transmission rebuilt on my 97. Cost $900 for the rebuild only. I did not have them pull it or re-install it. I don't know about the sandpaper sound. When mine was going out on me it would grind and shake the entire jeep when I hit the gas because the gears were slipping.
Maybe try changing the tranny fluid and see if that will make any difference.

I know of a transmission shop with a great reputation. I had him look at the jeep and take it for a ride and he thinks the syncros are bad but says he has to open the transmission to see what else is goin on in there. I also have a rear main seal leak. He seems to think I could continue driving with the tranny as it is but I don't like the idea of that. He quoted me 1500 for the rebuild.
A few questions about driving it as it is.
(I'm am new to manual transmissions aside from driving motorcycles so I don't know much)

I hear the funny continuous sandpaper ish grinding sound only when I'm driving in 1st or 2nd and it only seems to happen after driving for a while. (What could this be)?
A similar sound happens if I'm sitting in neutral with the clutch out. Sounds like something is spinning and rubbing against something
Shifting up from 1 to 2 is ok. Shifting from 2-3 is rough and I feel a click in the gear shifter when I shift then a thump in the tranny when I'm ready to let out the clutch. 3 to 5 is smooth.
When I'm shifting from 3 back to 2 I hear something clicking or banging and I feel it in the shifter.

|Smashbox||Thanks guys. And yes I had a better look its the rear main seal and the pinion. But the transmission does also make some funny noises. What would you guys say is an average price to fix the rear main seal and the other leak? I don't want to over pay especially since I just bought the jeep and didn't know about the leaks|

|Big Cole||Looks like you have a leaking rear main seal and leaking pinion seal in your front axle. Neither of these items would affect your transmission|

Just bought a TJ. Transmission trouble!!
So I just bought my first jeep. 2004 tj. 120000 kilometers.
Took if for a short test drive and it seemed ok. It was around a 5 hour drive back home and halfway home when I stopped I noticed fluid dripping and forming a small circle on the ground below.
After driving another 2 hours (mostly in 5th gear and running smooth) I pulled into a garage and in 2nd and 1st gear the transmission was making a lot of noise. Sounded like rubbing 2 pieces of sandpaper together in a circle.
I made it home (all highway driving) and it was still smooth in 4th and 5th but still made the same sound as I pulled into my driveway.
It's been a while since I've driven a manual and I missed a gear 1 time I think going from 4 to 3. I'm wondering if I could have cause this trouble by doing this? Or did I get ripped off?
I looked underneath and its leaking in the front gearbox and the transmission. Ill attach 2 photos.
Hoping you guys can help me figure out what went wrong and what the problem is. How expensive is it going to be to fix ?
Appreciate the help!
