Wattapunk Since your TJ has the 'dummy' gauge, I would suspect with your symptoms with the no pressure reading and ticking, that it's the oil pump and not the sending unit but I would confirm that with a mechanical gauge.

oil gauge dropped to zero

Today my oil gauge suddenly dropped to zero. I stopped, checked under the hood, no visible signs of leaking. Oil was low, added a quart, pressure was normal at start up, within 1 minute gauge dropped again. There is a severe ticking noise now so I shut down then started up again, pressure was fine, ticking was quieted, within another minute or two, gauge dropped and ticking returned.

Only thing I can think is the oil pump went bad.

Any thoughts?
