|Hiatus83||could be a corroded neutral safety switch my buddy's xj had similar issue, took it out, disassembled, cleaned all copper connectors regreased, a little rtv to seal it, and hasnt had an issue since and now his reverse lights work.. if your reverse lights have been intermittent, its a taletell sign of it starting to not work properly|

Thanks Scott, that was the problem.
A little more info for those that are following or stumble upon this thread:
1. You will need someone to sit in the drivers seat, turn the key on and jiggle the shift lever. Otherwise I would not have been able to locate it (behind/above the drive shaft).
2. The shift arm has a little ball which the cable attaches to. When the plastic piece breaks then gravity takes over and the cable falls off of the ball. You are now dead in the water (or the woods) so to speak. Jeep won't start. Very bad design I think!
3. I will never go anywhere again without a couple of zip ties and some bailing wire.

|pigsooui||Thanks guys. I will look under it and see if the shift cable is broken and try the other suggestions if necessary. The shift cable seems likely as the shifter is loose.|

|Sccafire||Crawl underneath the Jeep on the drivers side. Check to see if the shifter cable is still connected. It is held on by a plastic clip that breaks. If it is broken you can zip tie it up till you get home. There is another thread on here for the part number that you will need to purchase a new plastic clip.|

|Big Sarge||Could try to set the emergency brake, shift transfer to neutral, then see if the transmission will lock into park. Should also be able to start in neutral.|

Won't start. Automatic shift problem?
My wife started our auto transmission 2005 jeep today. Turned off and then tried to start again. She said shift lever was loose (not hitting detents). I tried to start it and same thing. Seems that maybe it is the shift mechanism that will not it allow it to start in any other position than park may have gone bad. Of course the Jeep is in the woods of Arkansas right now. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
