jpconard Took the old one off, seemed full of mud and lots of play, decided to just get new one.

$100 later and a little more time and it sounds like new.

Think I'm going to stay out of the mud, too many parts to replace.

Starter sounds like gravel/marbles

Lately when I start my 03, it starts fine but the starter sounds like gravel or marbles bouncing around for a second after it starts.

I did search but couldn't find anything very similar, or if I did no resolution. A general google search led me to a VW site, where it mentioned the starter doesn't disengage quickly enough and they would take starter off, partly disassemble and lubricate it to fix it.

Don't really want to purchase a new starter right now as I've just put in new radiator, water pump, fan clutch, belt, tensioner, etc.

I can live with the noise, just don't want it to cause any other damage (to the flywheel teeth for example).

I can't be sure it is the starter, but that is where I think it is from. Doesn't sound like engine noise, lifters, etc.
