Thanks for the input. Once I get home from my deployment I was going to do a thorough tune-up and see if that helps out the ticking at all. I've heard that it could be a cracked exhaust manifold amongst other things. I think I'll use some of the tricks mentioned to try and isolate the sound a little bit better.
I appreciate the help, I'll post an update here in a couple of weeks, hopefully with good news!

The 4.0 is known for ticking noises. But might as well locate where it's coming from.
Nother way to locate the sound is using a long screwdriver. Place you ear over the handle end, and touch the other end on various spots around the engine compartment, careful for moving parts.
On ours I found the distributor was the culprit. Had a dry upper bushing. Something not normal for the early versions (ours is a 97) but notorious on the later ones. And it's one of those if you don't catch it early you can easily end up with major damage.

|SecretAgentMan||Try using a vacuum cleaner hose to isolate the sound. Put one end to your ear and point the other end at stuff. You'll look goofy, but it will work.|

My '06 sounds more like a Singer sewing machine as the mornings get colder. That sound is fairly normal for a 4.0L motor.
The engine uses a hydraulic tappet/lifter so there really is no lash adjustment to be made. If you had a collapsed lifter, you'd know that right off!

|Tjkid8||Pop the valve cover an take a look doesn't take much to unbolt that cover then look at your push rods an rocker arms to at least know you can eliminate them as the problem|

Need help with ticking coming from engine...
My ride is emitting a ticking sound coming from the engine bay. It sounds like a lifter, but it's really hard to pinpoint the sound. The jeep has 116k on it right now. I don't know if this is a common complaint with the 4.0, I'm just trying to figure out if it's something simple or if I need to break into it and do a valvetrain job.
Also, I'm trying to find a machine shop in the Anchorage area if anyone happens to know of one. Once the winter is over I'd like to give the motor a refresh/stroke... who knows, I might already need a refresh anyway.
