Never mind. The ends were welded at a bit of angle making the ends of the flanges more narrow than the bar. I just hit it with a sledge hammer ten times or so and it bent out enough (1/8 inch) for it to fit on. Wasn't that hard to do, just wasted a lot of time wondering if the piece was wrong.

I bought the Reese 51145 from Amazon for a similar price, but can't get it to fit on my 2005 LJ. The inside distance between the top flanges (centered on the holes) is 42 9/16".
The distance it has to clear on my Wrangler is 42 11/16 (or even 12/16). There is no bending this solid piece of steel.
Every single review on AMZN says it is simple to install. I just spent 30 minutes with my son and couldn't get it to go. It simply isn't wide enough.
Anyone insight would be helpful. Is this is a "made in Mexico" thing or am I just missing something? I can return it, but don't want to if its user error on my part :-)

|glg20||Get a tow rated bumper with provisions for safety chains if one plans to tow a trailer on a public road. Doubtful that your insurance company would pay out on a tow related claim on one that is not tow rated.|

If you offroad much, I would definitely not install a low-slung hitch like is shown above in post #4. That type of hitch can drag on the terrain way too often & way too easily when the terrain gets a little uneven. That's the type of hitch I first installed but it didn't take long to figure out it had to come off if I wanted to continue offroading on tougher trails.
A better choice would be a 2" receiver hitch that is integrated at bumper height into a replacement aftermarket bumper. That type of bumper is really not much more to buy than the type shown above in post #4.
Dirt Worx has such a bumper, as does Olympic with their Rock bumpers.

I installed a Reese Towpower 51145 Pro Series Class III Hitch with 2" Round Tube Receiver. I had gone round and round about replacing the rear stock bumper with a new one that had a built in receiver, but found this one on Amazon for $116. It bolts right into the stock frame locations.
I did have to make a slight modification to the exhaust pipe. It was right in the way of removing the bumper bolt and while I got it off, I had no room to install with the bumper there as the bolt was located behind the new receiver. The bracket that attached to the frame was outside the bolt location and the tailpipe was below the frame. Therefore the only location to get a wrench was inside the frame and there was not enough room. So I cut about 1 1/2" off of the tailpipe and could get a socket wrench with an extension in there to tighten the bolt.
Other than that, it was a piece of cake. Now I can use this with my Hitch carrier to take my party on the tailgate, gear to the beach and camping and tow a trailer now and then. I am glad to finally have this receiver added.
One thing I really like about this receiver is how it is really snug up against the bottom of the stock bumper. Since it is round, you barely notice it there as it seems to curve up underneath the bumper.

LJ = decreased departure clearance
Receiver hitch= decreased departure clearance
LJ + receiver hitch = double decreased departure clearance but it may help protect the tail pipe

When I bought my Jeep, I told the dealer I needed a 2" receiver or I wouldn't buy it.
They took it to U-Haul and had one mounted. Looked just like that Mopar hitch pictured above.
I kept hitting and dragging it on stuff when I started going on harder trails. I ended up selling it years ago on Craigslist for $50.

does this mopar hitch fit multiple models, or is it tj-specific?
I wouldn't expect the hitch to be a problem in terms of "departure angle", what with the gas tank hanging down so low right there. But I'm not planning on doing any serious off-roading, anyway. My main concern is that the receiver tube is far enough "aft" so that a bike rack, etc, won't bump into the spare.

|CRolandLJ||I have the same mopar hitch... paid $50 for it and a set of faded stock bumpers. It attachs directly to the frame so when/if you drag it on a trail it's not going anywhere unless you do something real dumb. Very easy to install, you just lose the recovery/tow hook on the rear drivers side in the process.|

Check CL. Look for a 2 inch receiver. I found a Mopar 2 inch with hardware and draw bar and ball for $45. This is the same one sold for the 04-06 Unlimited. I ground off the box for the plug in and coated it with bedliner. Around here they sell all the time for $40 to $60. Lots of folks do not like the reduced angle of departure of a hitch on a Wrangler. I just do light trail and back country roads and it is not a problem.

|Daddy_O||I used the Curt hitch on my 06 LJ also. Easy to install and it does not affect access to the spare or anything, but it does reduce the ground clearance for the back of the Jeep, and it's not much to look at. If I had it to do over, I'd look at one of the hitch-bumpers instead.|

Any tips on a particular make/model? I need to add one, and just want to make sure there aren't any issues with accessories (bike rack, cargo carrier, etc) not being able to clear the spare tire. Or do they all place the receiver tube pretty much in the same spot?
