Help, Gears Grinding!!!

I typically only get into situations where 4 wheel high is adequate in my daily ride. The other day was different and I attempted to engage 4 wheel low per my Jeep manuals instructions, could not get into low and gave up because of the grinding gear noise-not good. What am I doing wrong? 2006 Rubicon Automatic transmission, stock, stock, stock.
