Thermostat = 12.99

Wyominer Is the waterpump weeping/leaking? If so, change immediately, and if they told you it was bad, chances are pretty good that it is bad. If you have basic mechanical skills, basic + tools & a place to work, this is a very do-able repair. Stu Olson's TJ web site has a good article giving step by step instructions on changing the waterpump, which would include changing the thermostat. Just a few days ago, on here, somebody gave very good instructions on changing out the idler/tensioner pulley. Good luck & welcome!

If you don't have the tools yet, what better excuse to get them? If you have to a shop, do some looking around. Look for a smaller independent shop, might get a better deal. Also what year, engine, trans do you have?

Schmo $800 sounds really high to me. Sounds like you'd be paying close to $600 in labor . . . what the hell for??? I could see $400 and them charging you 2-3 hours of labor, but at $75 bucks an hour, you'd be paying them for 8 hours of labor . . . it probably wouldn't take a complete noob 8 hours to do this stuff . . . let alone a professional. I'd look into doing it yourself or do some shopping around to make sure you are not getting screwed.

A quick Google search is always your friend . . . just a sample:

Water Pump = $75
Thermostat = $20
Idler Pulley = $25
Belt Tensioner = $50
Serp Belt = $40

Need Advice

I took my jeep in to the shop today, and was told my water pump was loose, and I needed a new thermostat, as well as my idler pulley was frozen.

They quotes me $800+. Does that sound right?

Also, if I just get the idler pulley, and belt tensioner, with belt replaced, and wait on the water pump, what could happen?

Thanks,

G
