I usually follow identically with what mrcarcrazy said...
This question is one of those questions you can ask 20 different people and receive 20 different answers...with none of them being wrong.

Has a lot to do with the new (modern) oils.
5k is generally accepted a safe number. Many manufacturers (honda, toyota, Lotus, BMW, etc.) recommend numbers between 7500 and 12,000 miles between changes with a synthetic oil and quality filter.
The only way to know for sure is to have your oil sent off for an oil analysis to see how well its performing.
I play it safe with a quality filter (mobil 1) a synthetic oil and 5k between changes.

Any name brand oil. I like Castrol myself. A good Wix filter, or a fleet service brand (if you can find one). NEVER use Fram filters.
I have found on newer (modern) engines, you can usally skimp on oil changes & go up to 5k miles. The only one I would be nervous about running up to 5k between changes would be the Chrysler 4.7 as some are starting to have sludging issues.

personaly I dont think it matters these day,it all comes from the ground anyways.I use whatever is cheaper, got 204,358 on my 2000chevy trk, still running strong.just as long as you change it every 3000-4000 miles

I will use nothing but synthetic nowadays, as it lets you drive (at least) 5000 miles between changes under normal driving conditions. Under severe driving conditions change it at 3000 miles or sooner depending on your conditions.
Can't go wrong using what the manufacturer recommends or better. Just change it often...that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it...
