ErictheBastard Thanks for the warm welcome - I'm definitely Rubicon bound. The gearing and the stock tire and wheel setup seem to suit my needs perfectly. I'll probably never use the sway bar disconnect feature, but I'll make good use of the rest of it.

I've restored a 66 Jaguar E-type from the ground up (torn down to over 30,000 pieces) so I've had my fill of wrenching (although the Lotus gets an odd tweak occasionally).

I can't wait and even my wife is thrilled about the pending arrival. BTW, my wife is insane - she drove cross country (Rhode Island to Los Angeles) in a Suzuki Samurai three times.

The OP stated he liked the torque that the 4:1 ratio would produce. Coming from a sports car background, that seemed to be important to him. I can speak from experience of driving the 08 Wrangler Unlimited 6 speed with the tow package and 3.73 gears. There is definitely more torque in the Rubicon Unlimited 6 speed. If the extra dollars has you guessing about what you can afford, go with the cheaper model and build if you are inclined. If you're not into turning wrenches, get what you want. If you are not sure that you will use the bells and whistles, you could do what I did and figure out what all the bells and whistles can do after you get it. I'm still having fun trying to figure all that out. Only you can appreciate what factors will help you decide.

inzgary Hi and welcome to the forum.
You can't go wrong with the standard trans if you already like driving them. Save gas and get more torque!
I'd recommend the Rubicon only if you plan on doing regular offroading otherwise you should take a look at the X/Sport or the Sahara too.

FNG - Introduction

Hey pavement haters. New Guy here.

Have always had the bug for a Jeep, but lifestyle/business commitments and other factors have kept me from it over the years. However with the introduction of the JK Unltd a few years back, I couldn't hold back any longer.

So at some point in the next few weeks, I'll be ordering a 6-speed Rubicon Unltd in whatever shade of green that's being offered that week. Even though I doubt I'll ever engage in technical rockclimbing, I found on test drives that the 4.10 gears are going to be an absolute must for my driving style. I'm much more of a sports car guy and it's going to be an interesting transition from my '05 Lotus Elise (one of the quickest cars available to mere mortals) to the Wrangler Unltd (one of the slowest vehicles I've EVER driven). Nonetheless, I think the 6-speed will take any potential frustration out of it (I don't expect this to perform like a sports car - I just want it to be able to hustle itself up a freeway ramp and comfortably hold normal highway speeds for the 1-2 hour journey to the fun stuff).

I love the bare bones nature of the Jeep - surprisingly not unlike the Lotus, which (for the uninitiated) is the most barrenly appointed purist sports car you can buy. It (the Jeep) will be my daily driver and the only thing on the market these days that mixes practicality with 'I WANT to drive it' fun.

Years ago I was up to my fenders in silt in my Toyota Tundra - stuck for three hours when a CJ came hopping along, threw me a line and pulled me out in 10 seconds flat. Not that I wasn't a believer before, but there's nothing quite like being on the receiving end of a miracle to bring about total conversion.
