Gary2 Pumps Only : PSC Motorsports, Off-Road Steering Experts Just an idea .

Jerry Bransford Based on what you're saying, it sounds like your pump may be giving out. If you replace it, I would stay with a good quality pump & avoid the auto parts store brands like Cardone like the plague. One guy over on JU recently went through THREE bad Cardone PS pumps in a day trying to find a quiet one before he gave up and went with an OE pump. Lifetime warranties or not, most of the auto parts store branded water pumps, alternators, starter motors, PS pumps, etc. are junk.

I had the same problem. Try to replace the steering fluid. If it doesn't help, you'll soon need to change the pump. I would reccomend to go for a new one, not a remanufactured. I installed a remanufactured one (MOPAR, sealed, bought from a dealer) and I have almost the same problems (however it improved the performance, but it is still not it what should be). When wheeling, if the pump gets hot (and it gets all the times), it starts loosing power and I end up with no assisted power, so I am planning to install a cooler, also (it will be much cheaper than buying a new pump).

CMEvans79 is it like a loud squeek? It sounds like that every once in awhile in mine then it goes away.

BFV yeah, the levels are good. Im used to the sound of the bypass too. I used to drive a ford. This just sounds like it is more than your average muffled buzz. Its really sounds more like an alarm buzzer thats low on batteries. Hahah, thats about as close i can get to explaining it. When i first heard it, it was immediately after doing some donuts in the mud. At that point it made the noise throughout the whole rotation of the steering wheel. Now its just at the stops. And i think the power steering goes out all together randomly. Its only right when i start it, and it seems like after it warms up it kicks back in... Weird.

Jerry Bransford Have you checked your power steering pump's reservoir level to make sure it's full to where it should be? Your 31" tires aren't even close to being too big for the OE pump. Also, turning the wheel all the way to the stops will produce some noise as that is when the pump goes into a bypass mode.

Noise from the steering

I have a 1999 Tj Sport. Whenever i crank the wheel all the way to one side or the other, the steering pump makes a rather loud complaint.
