|Knurlag||I had to drill a gap in the lip of the firewall to get the crank position sensor to back out. I replaced it with a, new, high quality, lifetime warranted one and now it runs like a top. Thank you guys for all your help. I do appreciate it.|

|Knurlag||I'm thinking it's the coil. I have a hot connection but...yeah. Spark plugs are ACDelcos. Firing order, gap, and wires are all factory specs. I can't find the camshaft/crankshaft sensors anywhere. Going to take the coil to autozone tomorrow.|

So far you've replaced:
Plugs - what kind?
Cap, rotor - OEM?
Wires - did you get you firing order pooched?
CSPS - what brand?
did you replace the battery?
Checking wires visually isn't going to work... DVM is essential. ..
Have you physically inspected and tested/ cleansed your connections to ground?
Have you replaced you battery cables?
Have you done the camshaft positioning sensor ( if applicable)?

|Knurlag||Ok, I checked all wires and connections in all fuse boxes (nothing), sprayed a couple squirts of ether in injectors while cranking (nothing), changed spark plugs and wires (nothing), fuel pump running and filter checked (no problem), and done for the day. Do you think it is the ignition coil or timing?|

|Knurlag||Ok, I am also new to the forum but I am hoping that you guys can help. I have the same issue as the start of the thread. Wrangler will crank but not start, no smoke or instrument possession, so I am hoping that it is just the fuel pump. Now I might sound ignorant but I am new to owning a Jeep (3 days). So, this being said, where is the fuel pump?|

Not sure if yours has it - a fuse/relay box just in front of the battery?
If so, lifting the lid exposes the fuses and relays. Look at the sides - there are latches to take the upper part off. Unlatch them and you can get to the bottom side of the sockets.
Look closely for a burned or bad connection.

It should be pretty simple.
Get it to smoke again. Use a strong pencil beam flashlight to find the source of the smoke.
I suspect it's where the ground cable (-) attaches to the engine block. The bolt is loose or the crimp connector has gone bad.
Make it smoke a little - smoke is generated by heat - something's getting real hot and burnng the oil/dirt off. Feel around, find the hot spot.

|CJ2WRANGLER||Have you checked the fuel pump? Sound like the exact same thing mine did, I had a buddy check the fuel pressure that I was pushing and it was only like 0.5 lbs. I took everything off of the top of the throttle body just to pour about a tablespoon of fuel into the throttle body and it fired right up. Hope this helps|

|T-BONE N BIXBY||Anytime you're unsure to what the problem may be, it's best to get it to a mechanic. You can really waste money chasing down what "might" be wrong with it. Good luck dude!!!|

|Fweaky||That sounds like the area the PCM or Powertrain Control Module is in. Its on the firewall above the battery. It is possible that is your problem but I don't know for sure.|

Just an update on the situation.
Replaced the crankshaft position sensor and still a no go.
This problem is driving me crazy.

Jeep will crank but won't start...
Hey guys, new here to the forum but I've got a problem.
Jeep Wrangler 1998 4 cyl.
I'll give you all the details I can recall
OK, so last week we got about a foot of snow here. I am on my way home and pull into the gravel drive to our barn where my jeep stays. I got stuck in a snow drift and couldn't get out. I had it in 4 low and was trying to go back and forth to get my jeep out. So I had it in reverse and the jeep stated to shutter and shake as I was trying to get out. I gave it some more gas and then the engine stuttered and then died. In the end had to tow it to the barn, where it now sits. The engine will crank, but will not start.
Here's what I've done so far.
spark plugs, spark plug wires, rotor, distributor cap, ignition module, had battery tested (came back good).
all fuses good (under the glove box and under the hood), took of air cleaner and tubes sprayed stater fluid into TB but got nothing, checked ignition module with voltmeter and came back 0 volts. (check old one and got a very low voltage 0.5 volts DC), was not getting any voltage at the distributor cap on new or old one.
This leads me to believe that there is an electrical problem.
One more thing that just happened today, once all the new parts were installed, tried to start it and but it didn't fire. My assistant clams that he saw a small puff of smoke come from the corner closest to the outside of the jeep, near the battery; from the fuse box under the hood. (I did not see it, but after a few more attempts to start the jeep I smelled that burnt electrical component smell at the location where the smoke may have come from.)
So, I am stuck and don't know what to do now. I really miss driving my jeep any other car is just not the same.
any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated.
