|Stefan||and as for that Helium in the tyres idea, that seems like a good idea...but, no matter what gas is put in the tyres to fill them, there will need to be the same PSI which just means, more helium would need to be compressed to equal the same PSI #'s|

I think that making our rigs lighter is going to become a new issue for many of the companies currently making products for us. Hopefully ,in time, the shops will see the benefits of making things lighter.
For one thing, I've been looking into taking the dimensions from my congocage by KargoMaster, and remaking a rack exactly like it...only out of aluminum. And possibly making the crossmembers up top of the rack more aerodynamic (by making them flatter or ovular in shape)

A guy here in Germany which runs a very reputable 4x4 shop won a lot of european offroad competitions in his 4banger TJ, stripped from every unnecessary part and he has drilled like 600 holes in his rig to save weight. Sure, the turbo and his driving skills helped a lot, but he just drove up obstacles where others in heavier rigs had to winch.
Then he built himself a buggy - modified Avalanche chassis, alumininium axles, custom built winch, custom Atlas, aluminum radiator, carbon seats, carbon diff cover, even light cabling from Formula 1 cars - he got some of the big companies in the 4x4 industry built him custom products. Everything topped of w/ a nice Callaway corvette engine...hmmm....

I'm feeling these:
I had a set in a past life. They are comfortable but they are not adjustable. If you are overweight, they will not work well. The price is reasonable, and they should save some pounds.

Sooo many ways to lighten a vehicle. It boils down to personal preference and budget which ones are going to work for you. These are general ideas for any vehicle, not just jeeps.
- Remove carpet, floor mats, etc.
- Remove stereo, speakers, amps, etc.
- Remove paneling, padding, or insulation that isn't needed.
- Purchase lightweight racing seats for front.
- Light weight battery
- Remove air conditioning (that alone will save over one hundred pounds)
- Replace exhaust manifolds with headers.
- Replace exhaust system with a lighter aftermarket one. (no cats, etc)
- Purchase lightweight replacement panels such as hood or tailgate.
- Lightweight bumpers, or just remove bumpers.
- Remove doors, or other panels that are not needed.
More extreme ideas:
- Go through engine bay, interior, and under carriage and replace brackets with zip ties.
- strip down all wiring harnesses of excess tape and loom.
- Go through engine bay, etc and remove any heat shields, insulation, etc.
- Replace transmission with a lighter, custom racing trans
- Purchase custom aluminum driveshafts. (May not be a good idea in a jeep)
Literally any vehicle can lose between 500-1000 punds by stripping items off. You have to be willing to make sacrifices though! Every ounce counts! If you save a pound in a hundred places it's a hundred pounds!
There are other ideas I forgot to list, but I'm tired right now, and having a few beers.

The roll cage is something I wouldn't want to mess with...
carbon fibre/aluminum hood, however, would be an option.
I may just mold my own fibreglass hood

Gasoline does espand with temperature, but that is not going to help Stephan drop the mass of his TJ!
Lighter wheels can make a big difference. Has anyone tried tall skinny tires? Does anyone make them any more?

|Bobthegod||If you just want to remove weight.....look at dragsters and Nascar. They start with the frame. And what they do is drill holes (large holes 1-2") in the frame in rows. They remove as much of the frame as they can without undermining the strength needed. I don't know if you want to go this far.|

|Fweaky||I run a V8 and still do everything I can to keep it as light as possible. Synthetic winch line can save you a bunch of pounds. I take the hard top and doors off as soon as I can make it to work and back without freezing the twins.|

Gee, I always though gas had a variable weight.
I had to carry a gallon about a mile when my girlfriend ran out of gas. It may have been 8 lbs when I started, but when I got there it weighed about 500 lbs.

It's pretty close to 8 lbs/gallon
I think water weighs just under 8 lbs/gallon...not sure whether gas would be heavier or lighter, but it'd be in the ballpark.

and...Yes, Less weight= Better performance...(not just within the engine, but in other areas as well)

|Bobthegod||People people.....Taking off 100-200 lbs does not make a differance when measuring speed. Im sorry I was talkinig about weight vs horsepower using a 1/4 mile test for speed. Weight distribution when climbing is another thing altogether. I used to test vehicles for fuel economy switching from steel to aluminum and in some cases kevlar. The other major factor is who's driving and their habits + terrain + environment + type of fuel (octane) smog requirments etc. MANY FACTORS all of which have an impact. One person may get a noticable differance while the same vehicle with another driver make get something totally differant. Those who want more speed and ponies have gone to another bigger engine. I for one would love to have a HEMI but I got a 2.5 and I happy with it. I only get 17 mpg combined but hey it's a jeep. Not a jet.|
